Volume 9 Issue 9 | May 4, 2020
University News for Faculty and Staff
Dear Faculty and Staff,

In the last issue of this newsletter, instructions were included for forwarding your phone to another location especially if you are working from home. Unfortunately, c all forwarding only works from one extension to another in most cases.

The exception is if the person has a DID (Direct Dial in extension ). In other words people on these extensions can be called directly from the outside. The DID lines have numbers from 472-1100 to 472-1399. (Not all of these numbers are used.)

Also people when they dial *2 to forward their line they should also add a 9 first for an outside line. An example would be *2, 9, 472-1170 which would forward to the IT department.

Also the forwarding will only work with a local number, so if someone has an out of town cellphone it will not work even if they have a DID line. A point of confusion that often comes up is that not all 641 area code numbers are local.

People with non-DID lines can only forward to another MIU internal extension.

This feature lets you route all incoming calls to another phone.
1. Lift handset; receive a dial tone.
2. Press *2; receive an interrupted dial tone.
3. Dial the number you want calls forwarded to; receive a service set tone.
4. Remember to cancel your call forwarding. You won’t be able to call out until you do.

To cancel call-forward:
1. Lift handset; receive a dial tone.
2. Dial #2; receive a service set tone.
3. You will not be able to call out from a call-forwarded phone, except to the campus operator. (If you try, you will always receive a fast-busy signal.)
4. Only the phone you have forwarded to can call you.

COVID-19 in Iowa

COVID-19 is the infectious disease caused by the novel coronavirus. This new virus and disease were unknown to the population before the outbreak began in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. This page provides information, maps, and resources about the coronavirus response in our local area.
What You Can Do to Prevent Illness

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person:
  • Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  • Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.
Boosting Immunity and Prevention Naturally
Rest, reduce stress, favor warm foods, stay active with moderate exercise, add special spices, and more
BY ROBERT SCHNEIDER, M.D., F.A.A.C.
The latest advances in modern preventive medicine, together with discoveries from the ancient health science of Maharishi AyurVeda®, suggest simple but powerful ways for everyone to enhance their immune system for disease prevention and health promotion.

There are five main factors to consider, which we’ll discuss one by one:
Whole foods and herbs help boost immunity
1. Rest
2. Diet and Digestion
3. Physical Activity
4. Stress Reduction
5. Herbal Supplements

For Ayurveda, we’ll take the perspective of Maharishi AyurVeda, which is the ancient science of Ayurveda revived in a holistic, comprehensive framework by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, Founder of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique. For modern medicine, we’ll draw on the latest advances in preventive medicine.

Using the best of both worlds in this fashion is called integrative medicine.

Rest and Immunity
People who don’t get enough sleep are more likely to get sick and recover more slowly from infection, research has found. Scientific studies show that sufficient sleep improves immunity and resistance to disease. Many biological processes that repair and restore the body’s normal physiological and mental functioning take place during sleep.

eBook on Maharishi Ayurveda
In April 2015, a major international congress on the ancient Vedic health science of AyurVeda was held under the patronage of Dr. Tony Nader, MD, PhD, MARR, internationally renowned scholar of Vedic Science, and leader of the global TM Movement.
The conference brought together many of the world’s leading scholars, physicians and researchers in the field of AyurVeda — the natural, prevention oriented and holistic health care system of ancient India. Presentations were made by 50 prominent speakers and researchers to the over 500 participants from 49 countries.

As part of the congress, a 68 page book was prepared to give as a gift to the speakers. The book contained selected quotes from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi’s lectures on AyurVeda from 1979 to 2006, along with many beautiful photos of Maharishi.

At this delicate time in the world, we wanted to offer you this special book. Arlene has made this now into an eBook. To view the eBook, click here or on the picture above. It is best viewed on Google Chrome. Please turn the pages slowly and click on any page to enlarge.

Emphasizing the significance of Ayurveda in health care around the world, Dr. Nader in his keynote address had said, “Ayurveda as Maharishi has shown it, encompasses all fields of knowledge. The term Veda itself means knowledge and AyurVeda is Total Knowledge of life. Total Knowledge of all aspects of life."

With best wishes,
Raja Harris, Arlene and RR Lauren

The “Delicious Rituals” Laura Dern Is Using to Practice Self-Care in Quarantine

Kylie Gilbert
April 20, 2020
Laura Dern  has always been steadfast about her self-care, before it became a buzzword. She’s been meditating and doing yoga since she was a teen and has been taking magnesium supplements for stress religiously for years. But ironically, once the  coronavirus pandemic  hit, her self-care “went out the window the moment I needed it most,” the actress and producer tells  InStyle  (over the phone).

“I completely dropped my meditation. In a crisis, everything else falls away. The anxiety and stress of everything going on made it too overwhelming,” she says.

This isn’t surprising considering many   women have shifted their focus to care-taking  above their personal needs, often for parents and children at the same time, which happens to be the case for Dern. “Women are notorious for guilting themselves out of self-care,” she says.

But that has changed for Dern after weeks of stay-at-home orders: “I am realizing that as a mother and a daughter, self-care is a requirement in my day if I’m going to stay healthy enough to be the sole provider as an only child for my parents — getting and preparing their food and making sure they’re safe — while taking care of my kids who are home now doing online school,” she says.

One way she's doing that is by reclaiming time in the morning for herself. “If I can wake up and meditate before I grab my phone, that really helps me be centered for everyone else throughout the day,” says Dern, who adds that Transcendental Meditation, or TM, has become a daily ritual with her   teenage kids, son Ellery Harper, 18 , and daughter, Jaya Harper, 15, as well. “In the afternoon, we meet up and we sit together on the couch and we have our meditation practice.”

How I'm Living Now: David Lynch, Director
4/20/2020 by Seth Abramovitch

The auteur has been productive in quarantine, working on various art projects for what he anticipates will be the long haul: “I don’t really think I can make a film until there’s a vaccine.”
With production grinding to a halt in the face of the novel coronavirus, the entertainment industry has found itself navigating uncharted territory. To offer a better sense for how, The Hollywood Reporter is running a regular series that focuses on how Hollywood's writers, actors, directors, executives and others are living and working in these challenging times.

If the empty streets of America have taken on a distinctly Lynchian feel during lockdown, David Lynch himself hasn’t noticed. The writer-director of such eerie art house classics as Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive and whose Twin Peaks: The Return on Showtime earned nine Emmy nominations in 2018 has been holed up inside his Hollywood studio during the COVID-19 crisis, busying himself with painting, music and film projects. He credits his positive state of mind to his longtime Transcendental Meditation practice; his David Lynch Foundation is now bringing TM to stressed health care workers with an initiative called  Heal the Healers Now

How are you adjusting to the current situation?
Very well. I like isolation.

Lockdown is not all that different from your day-to-day life?
No. It’s very nice and I’ve got so many different projects that I can work on solo, so it’s not a problem for me.
