Workgroups will Replace Ad-hoc Committees, Board Adopts the Collaborative Model as a Policy
The North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) Board unanimously moved to adopt a workgroup policy , beginning a new model for how the agency plans to work through implementing its Groundwater Sustainability Plan (GSP) . The transition to a workgroup model continues a collaborative path to consider sustainability programs and projects with direct participation from the public, member agency representatives, and other stakeholders.

For the duration of the GSP development, ad-hoc committees' efforts supported accomplishing diverse goals, from communication and engagement to technical and fiscal. With their purpose completed, the ad-hoc committees were dissolved by decision of the Board on February 27, 2020. Moving forward, workgroups will be formed as needed as the North Kings GSA's Executive Officer, Kassy Chauhan, identifies tasks that progress the agency forward to sustainable groundwater management.

"The North Kings GSA Board and staff are incredibly grateful to the ad-hoc committee members for their work and dedication to ensure our GSP is an effective roadmap for sustainability," stated Chauhan. "They established a solid foundation for our workgroups to build on as we work to balance groundwater supplies over the next 20 years."

The workgroup model provides its members the opportunity to work through tasks impacting the management of groundwater within the agency's service area. The composition of the workgroup - North Kings GSA member agency representatives, previous ad-hoc committee members, members of the public, and other stakeholders - ensures diverse interests are represented as a part of the collaborative process. Solicitations for the public to join a workgroup will be posted on the website and sent via email to the interested persons list (sign up on our website at www.northkingsgsa.org ).

Similar to the ad-hoc committee workflow, any findings and recommendations of a workgroup will move for consideration by the Advisory Committee, followed by the Board of Directors. The public will have the opportunity to provide feedback on efforts prior to a task's finalization.
Kings Subbasin Conditions Improve Overall in Water Year 2019, Annual Report with the Data Submitted to the State
The North Kings Groundwater Sustainability Agency (GSA) together with the six other GSAs in the Kings Subbasin submitted the first Annual Report to the CA Department of Water Resources (DWR) ahead of the April 1, 2020 deadline. The Annual Report serves to inform and update both the State and stakeholders in the Kings Subbasin on groundwater conditions and sustainability progress in water year 2019, the period beginning October 2018 through September 2019.

The period is considered a hydrologic "wet year" seeing 134% of average diversions on the Kings River, the majority of surface water supply to the region. Thanks to the hydrology the Kings Subbasin saw improvements in groundwater conditions with the overall groundwater storage change increasing by 210,000 acre-feet Subbasin wide.

The North Kings GSA member agencies including Fresno Irrigation District, Garfield Water District and City of Fresno imported 34% of the Subbasin's total 1.64 million acre-feet of surface water supplies. Groundwater extractions supplying urban and agricultural needs within the North Kings GSA account for 19% of the Subbasin's total extracted 1.06 million acre-feet.
