FEELING A LITTLE BLUE...

Shadow, my Husky play buddy who was so small when she showed up she could run under me between my legs, is feeling rather poorly.

We were playing tag in the backyard and hit one of the landscape lights, which flipped over and the glass in the bottom broke. A giant piece turned up and Shadow's front left paw landed on it--and it nearly cut off one of her pads, side to side, like a razor blade.

Doc says he might be able to save it but it takes months to heal. She had surgery, has to wear the cone of shame (I hate that thing), and take lots of pain meds. No playing for a long time.

So yeah . . . I am bummed.

Since I won't be running around for a while, I will be reading, and to do so, I keep my glasses handy because there are so many great books to read.

See how I did that?

Pop is very excited because they are getting ready to send something called THE BACHELDER PAPERS: Gettysburg in Their Own Words, 3 vols.  (David and Audrey Ladd, editors) to the printer.

Something sold out in 24 hours, but you can read about it below. This Gettysburg place sounds cool. I need to visit sometime.

This new book by Steve Norder called Lincoln Takes Command is supposed to be special and one of pop's favorites. There is a story below about how the image on the back came to be. Pretty cool. Check it out.

Other new or just released titles include  George Washington's Nemesis and  The Alamo's Forgotten Defenders (in paperback). Check out both below.

Here's to chicken wings dropped accidentally on the floor Sunday, a bit of spilled beer (I like beer), and a good Super Bowl.

Loving and thankful woofs to you all,

Miss Kenya

PS: Mr. Ted says he is cheering on the Niners this weekend because he is an NFC guy, but he doesn't despise the Chiefs like he does the Green Bay Packers or the New England Patriots. Once again, the Vikings get to watch it on their TVs.

WHAT ARE THE BACHELDER PAPERS?

John B. Bachelder was a painter, lithographer, and photographer, but is best known as the historian of the Battle of Gettysburg and the key driving force behind preserving much of the Gettysburg battlefield. Bachelder corresponded and met with hundreds of Union and also some Confederate soldiers, toured the field with many, and helped map where the units were on the field, and what they did there. Most of the older monuments on the field today are where they are today thanks to his years of unceasing labor.

His thousands of pages of reports, journal entries, notes, letters, etc. were in the New Hampshire Historical Society, where David and Audrey Ladd discovered them. They were transcribed, and originally published in a small run by Morningside Books in 1995. All letters are typeset for easy reading.

There is no source that comes more highly recommended for readers interested in the Gettysburg battle, or the Civil War in general.
 NEW Releases!
We are pleased to announce two new releases:

These books are now available. Call the office this week at 916-941-6896, visit our website, or email us.

This combines two dramatic stories involving the military law of treason and court-martials--creating a balanced view of the American Revolution's most fascinating personality.

One of the best remaining untold stories of the Alamo and Texas Revolution which explores a largely forgotten and long ignored history--the dramatic saga of the Irish in Texas.

A Behind the Scenes...
...look at what it takes to put together cover art.

The back cover of one of our newest titles, Steve Norder's Lincoln Takes Command: The Campaign to Seize Norfolk and the Destruction of the CSS Virginia, features an illustration of that famous ironclad by Andy Hall, a researcher and author from Galveston, Texas.

Andy created the original digital model as a personal interest project, using drawings of the ship available commercially through the Mariners' Museum in Newport News, home of the USS Monitor Center. Andy subsequently updated the model for use as an illustration for The Civil War Monitor magazine (Summer 2012), aided by correspondence with Anna Gibson Holloway, who at the time served as Chief Historian for Mariners' Museum and as content expert for the Monitor Center.

This recreation of CSS Virginia was built in Rhinoceros 3D, a digital modeling package widely used for industrial applications and in naval architecture, and rendered in Flamingo nXt. Andy began digital modeling while working with the Institute of Nautical Archaeology's Denbigh Project, documenting the wreck of one of the most successful blockade runners of the American Civil War.

Check out next month for Part 2!

Untextured models of MONITOR, VIRGINIA, and H. L. HUNLEY--all to the same scale.

SB Authors on C-SPAN
In October, three SB authors were asked to speak at the Pamplin Historical Park Small Battles Symposium--Jeff Hunt, Tim Smith, and James Morgan. These talks were recorded by C-SPAN and you are in luck! We have each link below so that you can either re-live the experience or take in the knowledge of these authors for the first time. Enjoy.

Letters to Ed Bearss
Edwin Cole Bearss, Civil War historian extraordinaire, turns 97 this June. Unfortunately, Ed's health is starting to fail. Tom Broadfoot, of Broadfoot Publishing, released an email stating, in part, the following:

"Ed Bearss, decorated Marine, wounded at Guadalcanal, author of many Civil War books, leader of thousands of Civil War battlefield tours, sought-after Civil War speaker, Chief Historian of the National Park Service. If your interest is the Civil War Ed has contribut ed greatly to your interest.
Ed is now 96, and confined to his apartment. He is quite hard of hearing so phone calls and visits are not beneficial.
He much enjoys and appreciates letters, as his wonderful caretaker daughter Jenny says 'letters make his day.'
So-consider taking a few minutes to write to Ed. Ideas: talk about the books he authored, or recall a tour or speech he gave, thank him for his service as a Marine and a Parks historian; pen any stories you have of the Civil War. If you've purchased any books from our recent catalogue of Ed's books...tell him how pleased you are to have books from his collection...Tom Broadfoot"

If you would like to write to Ed, forward your letters to our office OR you can email us and we will forward you Ed's address.  Please indicate on the envelope that it is a letter for Ed.

Letters may be addressed to:

Out and About
Enjoy these recent event photos.

The PA chill of night could not keep the members of the Lancaster CWRT away from Too Much for Human Endurance author Ron Kirkwood's presentation and book signing.

Frank Varney attended the Cobb County CWRT(GA). It was a great crowd and a number of books were sold. He is already scheduled to return in January 2022!

In this month's installment of  "where in the world is Sarah C.'s mom" we found her in....California! Barby stopped by the Savas Beatie corporate office to meet the ladies and Ted. Even though she is a HUGE 49ers fan, Ted made an exception and posed for a picture.
