Dear Friends,

For many of us the Emerson is the place where our community gathers. Our big beautiful brick building is the heart of our organization and we thrive with the energy that you bring to our halls. Currently, our halls are quiet and many of our programs are on hold. Please know that during this unprecedented time, the Emerson's staff and board of directors are working hard to continue serving our community. We are working hard, so that when it is safe for our community to gather, we will be ready to welcome you back to the Emerson.

While we are hunkered down in our homes we rely more on books, music, movies, and the arts to provide comfort and a sense of place. We believe that the arts are essential to our mental health and well being - especially now. Thank you for your continued support of local artists and arts organizations. All of us are looking forward to welcoming you back into our galleries, studios, classrooms, concert halls, and theaters.

We miss you and we look forward to seeing your beautiful faces again, soon!

With gratitude,
Susan Denson-Guy
Executive Director

 TENANT GALLERIES & STUDIOS

Here's a snapshot at what's going on in some of the studios and galleries during our Shelter In Place.

Carolyn Price
"My latest watercolor is the Fluttering Stone, tied to imitate a salmon fly. The salmon fly is a stonefly, and the emergence of the salmon fly is unpredictable, depending on when the river temperature reaches 52 degrees. The hatch lasts only a few days in a specific section of the river, resulting in a feeding frenzy. The Madison River is famous for the salmon fly hatch in June - July."

Carolyn creates notecards and prints from both watercolors and pastels.

Lynn Kinnaman - Lynn's Writing Studio
"Stuck at home? What a great time to write that memoir, novel, or other writing project you've been putting off! I can work with you on a one-to-one basis through phone calls, Zoom meetings, and emails to guide and encourage you to get that project underway."

LeeAnn Ramey - LeeAnn Ramey Fine Art
"On National Pet Day, I offered A special on pet portraits and got a great response. They have been a fun distraction from the "Rona". I also painted some flowers to cheer me up and brighten my kitchen. And I have commissions in the works for the new hotel. I am definitely much happier when I paint and don't watch the news. I miss my Emerson studio and everyone in Galleria Hall!"

You can reach LeeAnn at @leeannrameyart on Facebook, or email  larameyart@gmail.com .

Cherlyn Wilcox
"I've been working on these still life paintings looking for something slower  paced, more meditative and attainable during this complicated time-as compared to my intuitive, chaotic abstract work.  I plan to sell them starting Thursday with half of the proceeds going to the Food Bank. I can't sew masks. I can't provide much assistance in many ways right now. We are all feeling helpless and scared for ourselves and others and this is my small attempt to provide support and joy. Thanks!"

Artists' Gallery
The Artists' Gallery has put their annual Student Art Show online during the month of April. You can check out their work on our web page;

"While the gallery doors are closed, please message us via Facebook and our website:

At-Home Activity: String Printmaking!
Printmaking is a fun and easy medium to practice at home. You don't need expensive tools or a large press to create awesome, hand-made prints out of everyday materials!  Here is a quick and simple printmaking project to do at home.

Materials needed: thick cardboard, cotton string, glue, acrylic paint, construction paper,  a sponge, or large paintbrush.

Instructions:
1. Cut your cardboard into any shape you wish - this is your printing "plate."

2. Take a thick cotton string to create patterns, shapes, even text onto the surface of your plate.

3. Glue in place and let it dry.

4. Use a sponge or brush to apply a thick layer of paint onto the string. Make sure to coat the string entirely. You can also apply a thick layer of paint to a nonporous surface like Styrofoam or plastic and then dip/ push your plate - string side down - into the paint. Use a single color or several to create the desired effect!

5. Before the paint dries, flip your plate - string side down - onto a piece of construction paper.

6. Make sure to push firmly all over the back of your cardboard for maximum paint transfer.

7. Lift plate and voila! You've made a string print!

You can reuse the same plate again and again to create and edition of the same design, or create new plates to print a whole collection. The only requirement is to have fun!

Enjoy!
