Start Your Ride Season in Durham Region

With warmer temperatures and spring just to be around the corner, many riders are looking forward to getting their bikes out and finding some new locations to ride. Just a short drive from Toronto and conveniently accessible by car and public transit, Durham Region offers a variety of great road cycling routes that are ideal for exploring on two wheels.

For a great day of road cycling take your bike out to Pickering and ride the 72km Pickering/Ajax Loop. The ride can be started directly from the GO Station in Pickering. Bring your bike on the train or park your car at the station. Fuel up with snacks and water before heading southwest onto the fully paved Great Lakes Waterfront Trail. Head north over paved roads, through Pickering's picturesque rural areas. Experience the history and culture of Durham Region along the way as you enjoy smooth road riding into the county.  On the loop back, pause for a rest stop at Ajax's Pickering Village.

For detailed maps of the ride and more route options, check out Durham's Cycle Tours Map or visit Ontario By Bike's Great Place to Cycle page for the Durham Region.

If you are keen to get riding and looking to try something a little different early season, make plans to head to the annual Slush Fest in Haliburton, April 4. This one day only Fat Bike Festival will take over the ski hill at Sir Sam's giving riders lift access to trails suiting beginners to experts, including a 5km XC trail, cross track and technical single track.

Fat bike rentals are available with advanced reservations, and if you haven't yet tried this bike type this is a great chance to do just that. Make a day of it, ride or spectate. In addition to the in-the-saddle fun there will be live music, plus food and beverages on one of the sweetest hill side patio's in Ontario.

Get pumped to ride, view video on Facebook from 2019, here

For rental reservations, tickets or more info call Sir Sam's at (705) 754-2298 or contact [email protected] or visit SirSams.com.

Picture this: it is a bright spring day, the temperatures are in the double digits, and there is actually heat to those sun rays, further fueling spring fever! But a quick decision to make the most of the day and head out on your bike for your first ride of the season, is abruptly changed as you discover your bike is simply not rideable after a winter in storage. Determined to not miss the next great day, you finally get to your local bike shop and discover you need to book an appointment three weeks out for a spring tune-up and service!

To ensure that this does not happen to you, we suggest the following:

Check on you bike now! Do a quick safety and mechanical overview and take it for a short roll.

Address any problems sooner than later, head to the bike store early and beat the spring rush!

What to look for:
Tires and Wheels - Check tread is sufficient for new season on existing tires, that the wheels are not warped and still spin true, and pump it up!

Breaks and Gears - Test brakes to make sure they still give you enough stop power, gears change smoothly and there are no cable issues for either.

Chain - Add some quality bike lubricant on chain and all moving parts. Remove any rust before doing so.

Clean - Show your bike a little love! Give it a wipe down removing dust and also any mud and road grime leftover from last ride season.

Gear - Make sure all the accessories you ride with are at hand and readily attachable. Inspect your helmet for any cracks, wear or tear - and don't hesitate to buy a new one if it's less than perfect or older than 3 to 5 years.
