Gardening is Landscape Painting!
Well the season is marching on, plants are growing fast and everyone’s gardens are starting to fill out (of course that means weeds too)! The rain this week was so welcome and great to help all new plants become well established. I hope you are enjoying your gardens and are able to get outside to work in them. Our veggie garden will be getting planted next week…

We have a good selection of plants still available here – all kinds of options for annual colour. If you need help designing containers, now is a good time! Veggies are looking great too and we have plenty of perennials and shrubs to select from.
Our last day open with regular hours this year will be Sunday June 19. On Monday June 20, we will switch to an appointment system for the sale of shrubs and perennials through the summer.

Opening times until Sunday June 19

Open daily, 7 days a week, 9am to 5pm
Visa, Mastercard, Interac, Cash or Cheque accepted
Gift certificates available – great idea for your favourite gardener!

Dragon Wing Begonia in bright red
Dragon Wing Begonia
Have you experienced the ‘Dragon’ yet?

Dragon Wing Begonias are one of my favourite annuals of all time – everyone needs a Dragon Wing somewhere in their garden! Flowers are either bright red or soft pink, both with a yellow centre and are held above beautiful glossy green ‘wing’ shaped leaves. The effect is an upright bushy clump with foliage that arches and flowers that hang. The best thing about these Begonias is that they will grow in any light from full sun to full shade.

If they are grown in full sun, you will find them to be extremely drought and heat tolerant. As with all other annuals, they should be fertilized regularly – if the leaves turn red or start to curl, they need more food. I love the bright red Dragon Wing Begonia, combined with foliage such as Sweet Potato Vine Lime or flowers such as yellow Bidens Goldilocks, or Petunia Royal Velvet. Dragon Wing Red and Pink are available in numerous planter and hanging basket combinations and individual 4” pots. Not to be missed!!
We're happy to assist with a design consult
Garden Design Service
We’ll help you plan for your garden space

We are always pleased to offer design advice when you come to purchase. However, if you have a larger project or space that needs plants, you may need a little more time with either Kelly or myself. If this sounds like you, please feel free to reach out and we would be happy to assist with a design consult.

This is how our garden design service works:

  1. E mail, phone or drop in to let us know you that you would like some help. At this point we can chat about your project. We may ask you to get your beds better prepared with soil or mulch and give you some other tips to be ready for planting.
  2. When you are ready to make your purchases and plant, set up an appointment with us. That way we can ensure that we have dedicated and uninterrupted time to give you.
  3. Take measurements of the new garden. Draw a sketch map which shows all dimensions. Be sure to include heights and widths of windows or any existing plant material, including big trees. Make sure you know which way is north.
  4. Take photos from a few angles. Full sun or part shade?
  5. Make a list of any plant likes or dislikes and jot down any ideas or questions you may have.
  6. Feel free to send us the sketch map and photos ahead of time if you wish.
  7. Come to your design consult ready to purchase plants. We are happy to spend as much time as necessary with you, but we do expect you to make your purchases here.
  8. Go home and plant according to the plan that we have worked on. We love to see photos of your completed garden!

Milkweed Soulmate
Monarch caterpillar enjoying my milkweed
Milkweed
Habitat and food for Monarch Butterflies

We grow several selections of the native North American Milkweed, including the white flowered Ice Ballet and deep rose flowered Soulmate. Milkweed is important to plant and cultivate in gardens as endangered Monarch butterflies lay their eggs exclusively on Milkweeds, which then becomes an essential food for the growing caterpillars. Both Ice Ballet and Soulmate Milkweed form a tall upright clump of long green leaves, bearing clusters of long blooming vanilla scented flowers.

Plants are very easy to grow, but are often late emerging in the spring. They are not invasive and are safe to mix in with other perennials. Add a few plants to a sunny spot in your garden and watch for Monarch butterflies and caterpillars to arrive. This is a wonderful project to work on with children as the caterpillars are so easily identifiable and very unique. I was thrilled that my Milkweed plants were covered in caterpillars last summer and am hoping for more this year!
