The School Board voted to change the school start and end times for students beginning in the 2020-21 school year. The Middle School Out of School Time (OST) Task Force was established with the following purpose: to define the structures and systems of academic support and enrichment for all Middle School Students and the teacher work day in alignment with the new Middle School day (9:10 a.m.-3:52 p.m.).

As a part of the Middle School OST Task Force planning process, please click on the link below to help determine if enrichment activities, academic support, and athletics should be held before school, after school, or a combination of both. The survey takes only 2 minutes to complete and your input is very important for the task force’s planning work.

GT Invited to Compete in On-Line Stock Market Game
SLPMS Gifted Education Program Selected to Compete in the Capitol Hill Challenge, On-line Stock Market Game

Dear Lisa,
Congratulations!
St Louis Park Middle School is invited to represent your Congressional district in the SIFMA Foundation's 2020 Capitol Hill Challenge™!
We're excited for your students to experience an opportunity of a lifetime!

The SIFMA Foundation's Capitol Hill Challenge™ (CHC) program
is an exciting invitation-only national financial education competition for public middle and high schools that reaches every U.S. Congressional district. CHC matches each Member of Congress (MOC) with up to two public schools in their district to participate in a fun, educational competition that instills a deeper understanding of personal finance and economics. CHC features the acclaimed Stock Market Game™ (SMG) program where student teams manage a hypothetical $100,000 portfolio of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, impact investments and cash. The top 10 CHC student teams win a trip with their teacher to Washington, DC in June to meet their Member of Congress and be recognized at an awards reception on Capitol Hill.

Key benefits of using SMG include:
  • Students develop business, math, economics, financial literacy, research, and critical thinking skills
  • Hands-on, real-world learning tool
  • Educators don't need to be an expert in finance to use SMG
  • BestPrep staff provides training and support to educators
  • Students collaborate through the team-based model
  • SMG is a competition – students compete with other teams across Minnesota for the highest-valued portfolio
  • Educators have access to dozens of lesson plans, activities and other curriculum resources
  • The program runs from February 3, 2020 to May 8, 2020.
  • The maximum number of teams per school is 10 with 3-5 students per team.

Lost and Found
The Lost and Found at the Middle School has reached capacity. The system that was put in place to help return items to students has not had much success, and the clothes and other lost items continue to pile up. There are many very nice clothing items and coats that are hanging in the lost and found located at the back entrance of the building. If your student has lost any clothing items while at school (not on the bus) please have them check in the lost and found. At the end of quarter two (January 23) the remaining clothes and items that are not claimed will be boxed up, and donated to the STEP program. We will then start fresh when quarter three begins.

The first day of practice is Monday, January 13. The season lasts approximately eight weeks, usually until the first week of March. Practices are from 2:30-4:30 p.m., Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. There are no after school activities on Wednesdays.
The following must be received by the Athletic Director by January 13 for boys' basketball:
  • Registration and payment (see above for instructions)
  • Proof of sports physical exam (exam date can be found on PowerSchool) given within the previous three years (which clears the athlete for full participation) on file in the Health Office. If the physical expires during the season, a new physical must be provided before the athlete may begin participation. 8th Grade Choir Trip to Florida
On Thursday, January 9, 83 eighth grade choir students, their director, Mr. Carnes and seven staff chaperones left for an adventure in Florida. After months of planning and hard work, they were ready to participate in the Barbershop Harmony Society mid-winter festival. The students performed extremely well. As the only middle school choir in the competition, they were prepared to rank near the bottom, but earned an excellent rating and scored above seven high school choirs. In addition to the competition, the choir received coaching from master conductors, heard world class barbershop music and participated in a mass chorus.

In addition to the choir festival, the students visited the Atlantic Ocean (many of them for the first time) and spent a day at Walt Disney World.   All agreed it was an experience they will remember forever.
