A message from the President

Well, that was different.

Late last January, I was sitting on a patio in Orange County enjoying a cup of coffee and reading a report about the first COVID-19 cases in the US. My family and I were on a short vacation and I never imagined what would unfold over the next few weeks and, eventually, throughout the rest of the year.

This last year was different for all of us – whether it was smaller things like less meals out with friends or learning how to pass more down time (I see you, new bread bakers), bigger changes like teaching our kids from home or supporting our fellow business owners who were facing incredible difficulties, or even tragically adjusting to the loss of someone we love – we all had to do life a little differently. Not to mention the devastation of the local fires, national political climate and the difficult, yet necessary, racial tension and progress (though much more is needed) brought forth over the past several months.

Today, I find myself extremely proud to be the President of the Mid Valley Association of REALTORS®. Throughout the past year, REALTORS® across the country have stepped up to be a part of the solution in these areas. Many of you not only excelled in your businesses, but you selflessly stepped in to help others – whether neighbor, friend or stranger. The stories are as countless as they are inspiring. Thank you.

While I cannot promise everything will feel like it did way back in 2019, I am committed to working with the MVAR® Board, staff, and members to help us be even better positioned to impact our neighborhoods, business centers, and policy makers moving forward. Our vision at MVAR® is to create thriving communities through real property ownership. Accomplishing this will require us all.

I look forward to partnering with each of you in 2021. Happy New Year!

A message from the Special Events Committee

Can I just say I can’t wait for 2021 to unfold?   I am hopeful it will be better than 2020 but if it’s not, then we at least know what it looks like and we all survived!  Our last event as the Special Events Chair was the Award Banquet – where we partied like it was 1920; we had to cancel our annual member appreciation barbeque and soup wars; and we did manage to have a drive through Annual Children's Christmas party for 63 families and 180 children. You can see a short video of the event on the home page of our website. www.midvalleyassn.realtor

I’m always amazed by the generosity of our association when giving to this event.  Your hearts are generous and giving!   Thank you so much to all the volunteers and members who helped make this event happen during a pandemic.   I also want to thank our MVAR staff who go above and beyond for us daily!

I believe 2021 is going to be another record year for all involved in our industry!  Let’s tear it up and be our best as we navigate through the New Year.   Bring it 2021!

Lisa McCormick, Chair
Thank you to our volunteers who provided their time for the

The Commercial Market Insights
December 2020

This issue looks at the latest trends across the commercial property markets (multifamily, office, industrial, and retail) and features two pieces on the hotel sector and cap rate trends. The hotel sector has been struggling the most compared to other industries, but on a positive note, less than 2% of businesses have closed. Across all property markets, cap rates have remained relatively stable even as T-bond rates have fallen, but expect an uptick next year with the distribution of the vaccine and a slight rise in overall yields.
