CFA Judges' Association
Wendy Heidt

Are you a CFA Judge? Are you a current member of the Judges Association?

If yes to the first question and no or maybe to the second question then read on!

The CFA Judges Association in an organization for the judges of CFA. This is separate from the CFA Judging Program. When I first started, I was told it is a social club for the judges. But it is more than that.

Judges support each other. There can be online discussions about topics that concern all CFA judges. Awards are given out yearly. Once called the Spotlight Award as well as milestone anniversary service awards.

Members can be a trainee, associate, approval pending, or approved for 1-40+ years. It matters not. If you had been a member before it is easy to re-join.

There is no application process. If you are currently in the CFA judging program you can join. The process is to let the association treasurer, Jan Rogers, know you want to be a member and pay the $10 USD per year fee. Please contact her for paypal or snail mail payment options. Her email is jatreas@embarqmail.com.

Looking forward to having you at our next discussion.

CFA Show Rule Change
Change to Grand Points in Class Judging
– Defeated Grands Count!
Mary Kolencik

With the start of the new show season comes the change of some of our show rules. One of the biggest changes, and somewhat confusing, is that opens, champions and premiers may now earn grand points by defeating grands in class judging. This is an easy concept – defeat a grand with the brown or orange ribbon, get grand points from that defeated cat. Yet there are questions that people have about the actual implementation, especially in the case where there are only two cats in the breed/division.

Unaltered Cat Licenses, Breeder Permits, and More Changes Adopted by Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

Beginning July 1, 2022, cat and dog breeders residing in Winnipeg, the capital of Canadian province Manitoba, will have to obtain an unaltered cat or dog license and a permit for each female animal they wish to breed. Both the unaltered license and breeding permit require active veterinarian care and a history of responsible pet ownership. Other new provisions establish requirements for this "history" as well as an "at risk" designation placed on an "irresponsible owner" that can lead to temporary or permanent restriction from acquiring more animals. Winnipeg Breeding Permit applicants must also comply with the requirements of the Manitoba Animal Care Act which includes licenses for companion animal breeding premises.

Tax Tips with George Eigenhauser

By law, federal estate and gift tax exemptions are adjusted annually by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) to account for inflation. For 2022 the unified credit (for estate and gift taxes) increased. One person may leave $12.06 million (up from $11.7 million in 2021) to their heirs tax-free.  Married couples may be able to exclude up to $24.12 (up from $23.4 million in 2021) from federal estate taxes using a tax provision called “portability”. Using portability, the personal representative of a deceased spouse may elect to transfer decedent’s unused estate tax exemption amounts to the surviving spouse to reach the $24.12 million total.

For 2022 the annual exclusion from federal gift tax increased to $16,000 (from $15,000 in 2021). This exclusion is per donor and donee per year. For example, a couple may each gift a person $16,000 for a total gift of $32,000 to one person from the couple. If the donee has a partner the couple may gift the partner an additional $32,000 free of federal gift tax. To qualify for the annual exclusion the gift should be a present interest (such as cash) and to the recipient. Gifts in trust and gifts of non-cash assets may qualify for the annual exclusion if certain conditions are met.

These inflation adjustments by the IRS may mean more opportunity for you to structure your estate to avoid federal estate and gift taxes. NOTE: this only applies to federal estate and gift tax. Some states and the District of Columbia may tax your estate, an inheritance, or both, in addition to any federal tax. Please consult your tax advisor for more information.

Region 2 held their annual show and banquet in Albany, OR on June 11th. The show was small but very nice. It featured two cat dress up contests along with lots of cake and parties.

The banquet was held that night in the same venue. The exhibitors decorated their own tables. Some were very spectacular. I don’t know when they had the time to do all of this.

Here's hoping that all the regions had a wonderful celebration and are looking forward to the annual!

The first month of our show season is over and this month we begin a very busy time with regionals and the Annual. This will be an abbreviated submission this month as many in the region were getting ready for our regional which was held this past weekend.  You can see photographs from last weekend’s show here.

During this brief down-time for some of you, please don’t forget to review the amendments and resolutions to be presented at the Annual later this month. Express your thoughts, concerns, and/or questions to your club for discussion so your delegate has a good understanding of how your club wishes to vote on each of these issues.

See you next month!

Well this is my last news letter! It has been my pleasure to serve these last two terms, COVID notwithstanding. Best of luck to Michael Shelton!

The SWR is having our banquet award presentation this Saturday June 18th. If you haven't got your tickets yet, here is a link to use if you still want to come. I am sure we can make room for you!

This is, of course, the weekend before the Annual. I hope to see all of you at the Annual Meeting.

On a sad note one of our judges, David Mare, has decided to retire. We are all wishing him a fond good-bye. David, you will be missed!

Time: the present
Place: Hogwarts Great Hall (Hyatt Regency, Coralville, Iowa)

June 4th was a magical evening for the exhibitors of the Midwest Region wherein all present were wizards and witches of feline fantasy! Guests entered the Great Hall of Hogwarts via Diagon Alley, complete with Olivander’s Wand Shop, The Leaky Cauldron, Fortescue’s Ice Cream Parlour, and Gringotts’s Bank. Candles magically hung from the ceiling while banquet tables sported the banners of the four houses of Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. Over fifty percent of guests arrived in robes appropriate to the occasion. To end the magical evening, Lisa Thostenson’s family hosted a fun and entertaining after-party.

June has already been a busy month here in the Southern Region!

Colonial Annapolis CF held their annual show the first weekend of June in Parkville, MD. Exhibitors had a lot of fun, and it was a great show to kick off the new show season in the upper portion of our region.

Last weekend brought our regional awards show sponsored by the Cat Club of the Palm Beaches in Sanford, FL. It featured 1 experimental format ring each day in which only opens and champions or premiers were judged. Everyone seemed to like the format very much.

The club also coordinated the awards banquet, and due in no small part to their efforts, it was a wonderful celebration in true "Florida casual" style. Arrangements of garden flowers graced the tables. The meal consisted of not just one, but three types of barbecue along with assorted sides, and a make you own sundae for dessert. It was an intimate, casual celebration of friends, and everyone had a great time. As the celebration ended at 9pm, folks were well-rested for the following day of the show. Many thanks to both the club, and to the city of Sanford (who provided both the venue and so much assistance) to make this event go seamlessly!

In addition to our winning cats, the region was proud to honor Pennie Pendleton as our Exhibitor of the Year.

We had our first show of 2022~2023 show season at Tokyo.
On 21 May, Delight Cat Fanciers had its show with a rather good entry. Usually, we have a few shows in May.

On June 12, we had Yokohama Bay Cat Fanciers show at Tokyo. Show hall was not so big but the entry was pretty good. There were many new open/champion cats in this show.

In June, we have very humid rainy days all over Japan except for the Hokkaido area for around one month long. Before the long rainy season, people dry lots of things in the house to protect their valuable or important things.

Before the rainy season, we enjoy beautiful flower iris and sweet flag flowers found here and there beside lakes, ponds, and streams. This place, side of stream has been appearing in which Samurai drama. Please enjoy iris and sweet flag in this famous sightseeing spot.

Summer vacations are starting up in Europe, but we are full steam ahead in planning for our region awards banquet and show to be held 17 and 18 September 2022 in Belgium. Plans are being finalized and the details will be announced soon.

Everyone in Europe is excited that the COVID-19 testing requirement to enter the United States has been cancelled. We look forward to seeing you all at the CFA Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, and warmly invite everyone to join us in Region 9 for our upcoming shows.
