Rector's Ramblings

I just finished watching "World's Toughest Race: Eco-Challenge Fiji". It might sound a little familiar to some folks.  The Eco-Challenge began in the mid-1990's as a pioneering reality TV show. Mark Burnett created the idea back before he launched Survivor. Amazon brought it back as a new offering for their online streaming service and aired it this month. The actual race took place last fall in Fiji, so they held it in production for almost a year. The show is typical reality TV fare in some ways, in that they edit it to create suspense and keep you tuned it. One difference, though, is that the challenge of the race is not wholly manufactured and created as a game. The racers have to actually deal with the wilds of Fiji to get to the finish line.

Worship

Worship This Week

Please join us on Sunday, at 9:15 am, for online Holy Eucharist, which will be available on the Christ Church Facebook page here, on our YouTube page here, or the Christ Church website here.
Celebrate Communion with Us Via Drive-Thru This Coming Sunday

We are now offering Drive-Thru Communion at Christ Church each Sunday, following the live stream of the Eucharist, until 12:00 NOON. There is no need to make a reservation. Cars will enter at the gate next to the mailbox on Frederica Road and drive down the path. Car windows should remain closed until directed to be lowered by the clergy. A member of the clergy will administer the Eucharist, after which parishioners will drive to the back gate, to exit onto Stevens Road.
Prayer in the Church
Christ Church is now open for limited private prayer time by appointment.  Each afternoon, Tuesday through Friday, there will be opportunities for individuals, couples, or families (sorry, no groups that don't live together at this time) to spend time in historic Christ Church for prayer.  Prayer times will be 2:00, 2:30, 3:00, and 3:30.  Each prayer time will be 15 minutes in length, allowing 15 minutes between each session.  We will not be accepting "standing" reservations or reserving for repeat use more than one week in advance.  If we quickly fill all sixteen spaces for the first week we will begin scheduling the second week and beyond and will evaluate the possibility of adding more time slots.

To sign up you must call the office during regular business hours (912-638-8683), we will not take reservations via email.  You will be scheduled for your time only after speaking with Glenn Queener or another staff member who can confirm the reservation.  We ask that those who come in for prayers wear masks while in the church and wipe down the pew they sit in and anything they touch with provided cleaning materials as they leave.  A staff member will meet those with reservations to allow them access to the church, as our buildings are still closed to the public.  That staff member will screen for COVID symptoms including taking your temperature and recording names in our contact tracing log book.
Evening Prayer

If you enjoy hearing Evening Prayer read, please look for it at 5:00 pm on the Christ Church Facebook page here. The Rite I bulletin for evening prayer can be found here. The Rite II bulletin for evening prayer can be found here.

Sunday School for Children and Youth
Although we will not be gathering physically for Sunday School this fall, Mother Katie and our Sunday School teachers are looking through our usual curriculum to see what can be adapted to for use in an interactive zoom classroom or a YouTube video. We are excited about the possibility engaging our children through Bible stories! Our teachers have been wondering how Christ Church Children are doing? And they are looking forward to engaging with your kids and sharing faith together!

We are looking to start on September 13!
Please Update Your Contact Information!
We would really like to update our information on each child at Christ Church and our parents. We want to make sure we are communicating as effectively as possible! So when you get a chance, please text, call or email Mother Katie and let her know your child's name, grade, cell phone # (if they have one), email address (if they have one) and double check that we have correct parent contact info, as well. Computer Laptops Needed for Students Who Are Virtual Learning This YearLaptopsNeeded
For a variety of reasons, which include individual children's health issues and the compromised health of family members at home, many youngsters in Glynn County will be learning from home this school year. In order to do so, they will need computers to access the virtual learning programs provided by Glynn County.

Unfortunately, purchasing a computer is not economically feasible in many households, so we are asking for donations of any used, functioning laptops (less than 10 years old) for the children who will need them to do their schoolwork. Used computers may be dropped off at the Christ Church Parish House during normal business hours, but please call ahead at 912-638-8683 to make sure someone is available to receive your donation. It is best to wipe the memory of your computer, before donating it.

If you'd like to help get a computer into the hands of a child who needs one, and don't have a used one to spare, you may also make a donation to the Christ Church Pandemic Fund and designate the funds for Computers for Students. The average cost of a Chromebook, like the ones used in the schools, is $275.

Thank you for your help with this ministry! At Christ Church, we are committed to making the school year a success for as many children as possible!
Pandemic Relief for Our CommunityPandemicReliefMasks
Face Mask initiative
Father Tom presents masks to Dr. Oatanisha Dawson and Tiffany Lankford at Goodyear Elementary School.

Many thanks to all of you who have supported our Pandemic Relief Fund in recent months. One of the things those monies allowed us to do is to provide face masks for students in local schools. Now that the Glynn County
Dr. Anna Wiles accepts masks at Oglethorpe Point Elementary School.
School Board has instituted a mask mandate for all students, there is an even greater need for masks. We're committed to this outreach to help keep our children, school staffs, and community a little bit safer during this pandemic. We have a strong history of caring for children through Backpack Buddies, the ECW grant process, our Mission Committee, Glynn Episcopal Ministries is in keeping with this outreach priority.

Can you help iron masks? We NEED volunteers!

Fr. Tom makes a delivery to St. Simons Elementary School Principal Katy Ginn.
Each mask, with a school logo, costs us under $2. We have now committed to getting more than 10,000 masks into the schools, and there is a need for more. We need more folks to help iron on decals, as we work towards our goal to create masks for ALL children in the Glynn County school system. If you can iron mask decals, please contact Glenn Queener at 912-638-8683 or at [email protected] and he'll arrange for you to pick up a bundle.

Any support you can offer to help with this endeavor is appreciated. You can contribute to the Christ Church Pandemic Fund HERE. Please choose Pandemic Response Fund.

The Backpack Buddies Begin the 2020-2021 School Year - Would You Like to Sponsor a Student?
The Backpack Buddies program has been working in concert with Glynn Episcopal Ministries throughout the summer to feed not only our young Buddies, but their families, homeless teens, and needy elders, as well. We appreciate your gracious and tireless support of this food ministry and the additional help we've been able to provide these folks. Through your generosity, we've also been able equip children with school supplies and books, and provide technology for homeless teens. Thank you, Christ Church!

If you've thought about adopting a young buddy, or have had one in the past, this is a great time to begin a new sponsorship for 2020-2021. You can "adopt" a child for the upcoming year for $100, which will supply the youngster with weekend food bags for the entire school year. You  are welcome to donate by check (just mail it to Christ Church, at 6329 Frederica Road St. Simons Island, GA 31522 - check memo, Backpack Buddies)  or give online HERE (choose Backpack Program).
