Advocacy
LAAC continues to engage in advocacy related to COVID-19, especially regarding potential cuts to IOLTA and a request for an increase to the Equal Access Fund (EAF). LAAC is advocating on behalf of our members to ensure you have access to all of the resources and information you need - both to get through this public health and economic crisis as well as to continue to provide high-quality legal services to low-income Californians. Throughout this crisis, we will continue to monitor proposals and changes at the Judicial Council, State Bar, and legislature.
Legislative Caseworker Support Amid Covid-19 and Beyond
- In partnership with the California Commission on Access to Justice (CalATJ), LAAC is creating an online resource that will connect lawmakers and direct service providers during this time of crisis. With your support, legislative caseworkers will have the contacts necessary to help their constituents who are in need of legal assistance. Building this relationship is important and can have major benefits to the legal aid community in the long run. Please take a moment to fill out this short google form with your organization's point of contact that would aid your district's caseworker in connecting a constituent to your services. CalATJ Rural Access Committee COVID-19 Policy Paper
- LAAC continues to work with CalATJ's Rural Access Committee and will be examining the impact of COVID-19 in rural areas. For rural programs, how has the public health and economic crisis impacted your communities? We would like to highlight how you have continued to serve clients and any trends you are seeing in terms of remote service and access to justice in your rural region. New Housing Advocacy Tool Highlight
- Matthew Desmond and the Eviction Lab and Professor Emily Benfer from Columbia Law School developed a COVID-19 Housing Policy Scorecard based on the thousands of newly-released emergency orders, declarations, and legislation. They evaluate each state's matrix of protections and then score the state based on which measures they included to protect renters. California, while usually a state with better tenant protections compared to other states, ranks low because it provides insufficient protections, including the necessary supportive measures to address rental debt that could result in a surge of evictions immediately following the pandemic.

Online NITA Training
We are so excited to announce that we are
continuing our partnership with NITA, despite cancelled in-person events across the country. Many of you were concerned that you wouldn't be able to access their amazing trainings, and you are hungry to build litigation skills to prepare for the end of the eviction moratorium. We have partnered with NITA to offer LAAC members discounted access to NITA's online depositions skills course.
NITA offers courses online using the same materials and teaching the same skills as their in-person courses. Each program is an interactive experience with the same performance and critique, high-caliber instructors, and materials NITA is known for in their live, in-person programs.
The program dates reserved for LAAC members are:
- May 14-15, 2020
- May 27-29, 2020
- June 3-5, 2020

$200, but the rest of the cost will be covered by a scholarship (the online program typically costs $1,645). Please note that there are limited spots available and applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis.
