Dear Members,
The Board of Directors have once again decided to hold a virtual Monthly Meeting. Though, the meeting will be scheduled to start at 4 p.m., please try and log in starting at 3:45 p.m., so that by 4 p.m. the meeting can start promptly. This practice will continue until the Coronavirus is totally under control and life as we know it starts getting back to normal.
I would like to thank Lori Innamorata of Norwegian Cruise Line for setting up and hosting our April Virtual Meeting. It was great seeing those that joined in. I know that there were a few bumps but overall, I think the meeting went well given the fact our organization never held a virtual meeting prior. I hope that the May meeting will see even more members join in.
This entire situation is so full of uncertainties and it really causes one to pause and take count of so many things. All of this is my opinion but, at this point in time I feel that there is very little likelihood of salvaging bookings for the remainder of 2020. I keep hearing that 2021 will be a great year for the Travel Agent and I hope that this is correct, as I know we would all love to see that become a reality.
I continue to wonder how the next few months will continue to affect our organization. If and when they start to open up the State, I am sure that it will be done with caution. For the near future, I cannot see restaurants being allowed to go back to normal. With this in mind, if we have to keep social distances, it is hard to imagine how we are going to hold our monthly meetings. Our Annual Trade Show, which is scheduled for October could well be impacted by the fact that many of our Supplier’s budgets may not allow them to take part. Our monthly meetings will surely be impacted as well, as the these same suppliers may not be allocated the funds to sponsor a meeting. This and other issues are currently being looked at will be addressed by this Board.
Our near-term concern is the Elections held in June. Our By-laws requires the election of candidates be held at the June general meeting and the new officers announced. A plurality of eligible voters’ present shall be necessary for elections. Given the fact that we still may be unable to conduct a regular meeting come June, the board is looking at ways to conduct a virtual election. So many things are affecting our way of life but, in the end it will all work out and I know we will be stronger than before this pandemic started.
In closing, I want to wish all a very Happy Mother’s Day.

A bit of courage

The last few weeks have been difficult. The travel industry like all others will suffer greatly from the long standstill as it stretches into the summer months as it is almost certain to do. With far too much time on our hands right now, it can be tough to keep our spirits afloat, surrounded by so much threat and difficult news, isolated in our homes.
I collect heroes. In times like ours, I turn to them for a bit of courage. When I need additional inspiration, I often think of generations past. I think of the bombing of London during World War II where the population found the courage to endure nights spent in subway tunnels with little to eat and bombs dropping from the air. I think of the courage on display in the Rosie the Riviter poster. I think of the police and firemen who rushed into the World Trade Center and sacrificed themselves to save others.
Right now we have a lot of heroes to admire. The doctors and nurses, the techs and cleaning staff in hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Suddenly we realize the people who are preparing food and stocking grocery store shelves are essential. Sometimes heroism is just doing your job under the most difficult of circumstances.
Most of us never have to publicly display our courage. We typically have the great good fortune of placid times, of business as usual. Then, an event like the Covid-19 pandemic puts us to the test. On the other side of all this is a new opportunity to rise again to the challenges of democracy and to re-build our economy. It is going to require a great deal of courage, determination and a lot of backbone in the face of some serious obstacles. But re-build we can and will do, as long as we keep our courage and our wits in good order.
Stay strong, friends. We all have many fine examples of courage to emulate. You yourself are the product of some 50,000 years of human development and 4 billion years of planetary history. You and your ancestors are survivors. What we are experiencing now is just one more stumble in that same long process, but we have stumbled before and moved forward. We will do it again. Hang in there.

In A Hurry
A woman and her husband interrupted their vacation to go to the dentist.
"I want a tooth pulled, and I don't want Novacaine because I'm in a big hurry," the woman said.
"Just extract the tooth as quickly as possible, and we'll be on our way."
The dentist was quite impressed. "You're certainly a courageous woman," he said. "Which tooth is it?"
The woman turned to her husband and said, "Show him your tooth, dear."

TRAVEL NEWS
*NEW* Face Coverings Required for Customers during Air Travel
Starting May 4, all airline customers are required to wear a face covering over their nose and mouth throughout their journey, including during check-in, boarding, while in flight and deplaning. CDC guidance defines a suitable face covering as an item of cloth that should fit snugly against the side of the face, be secured with ties or ear loops, include multiple layers of fabric and allow for unrestricted breathing. The CDC recommends surgical masks and N-95 respirators be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders. Small children who are not able to maintain a face covering are exempt from this requirement. To learn more about face coverings visit the
