Calendar Update : Asynchronous Instruction Days
MISD COMMUNICATIONS|JANUARY 2021
MISD Updates 2020–2021 Academic Calendar with Designated At-Home Learning Days for Spring Semester
In December the Texas Education Agency (TEA) announced a new waiver option for school districts that allows for the scheduling of periodic asynchronous (at-home) instructional days during the spring of 2021. Asynchronous learning is a general term used to describe education or lessons that do not occur in the same place or at the same time. For example, students would learn from home and receive classroom assignments from learning platforms such as SeeSaw and Canvas, and complete the assignment independently.
Under this new option, districts are provided with an opportunity to change a regular school day to be asynchronous instruction (students learn remotely and independently) in order to provide additional planned professional development, teacher preparation days, and to focus on teacher planning and student engagement.
The waiver option came at a critical time during the COVID-19 pandemic, when most school districts and teachers can benefit significantly from additional planning and collaboration, due to the demands of teaching in-person and virtual students simultaneouslyThe following dates have been designated as asynchronous instruction days in McKinney ISD, and all students will learn remotely and independently on these days. There will not be a required time to log in on the asynchronous days, and assignments will be posted on SeeSaw and Canvas. More details coming soon from our teachers.

February 15 - School Holiday- Teacher Plan Day- no school for students
Club 360 Holiday Care will be available to elementary parents in need of childcare, however, due to staffing limitations students may not complete asynchronous assignments while in Holiday Care. Campuses will be providing additional information to parents regarding instruction on asynchronous/at-home learning days.

For the first week of March we will be celebrating all things Dr. Seuss with our Read Across America Week. Click here for a schedule of the Spirit Dress Up days. Dress GREEN for Monday March 1st for the book “Green Eggs and Ham!”
March is also Women’s History Month. I ran across a posting from The Book Wrangler (a librarian blogger) which put together a Women’s History Month theme with the Read Across America theme! Click here to access his United States map. Each state is linked to a special woman in history connected with that state! I hope you enjoy this and take time to share it with your children.
Our book tournament will be starting after Spring Break. Right now, we are
gathering favorite book titles. The tournament will feature 16 book titles for grades 3-5 to begin voting and 16 titles for grades K-2 to begin voting. Each week, keeping time with the NCAA March Madness Basketball tournament, students will be voting on match ups between the books and narrowing
them down to one final winner - the Champion! The 16 titles for each group will be revealed on Monday, March 1st so that students can begin reading books they are not familiar with. Click here to go to the Wolford March
Madness website with books and voting information.

Dear Parent or Guardian,

In an effort to promote a safe and healthy environment for students and staff, the District has been working to put in place new health and social distancing protocols in response to COVID-19. It is important for all parents to have a working knowledge of the infectious period of someone with COVID-19. People are infectious before they have symptoms, meaning they could be spreading the disease without even knowing it.

Therefore, it is imperative that parents abide by the following regulations:
  • ·   Parents are to screen their child, daily prior to arriving on campus, for any signs or symptoms of COVID-19 including:
Feeling Feverish or Fever (100.0 or greater) Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
Cough Fatigue (Excessively tired)
Significant muscle or body aches Headache
Loss of taste or smell Sore throat
Congestion or runny nose Diarrhea Chills
If your child demonstrates any of the above signs or symptoms, he/she must stay home until COVID-19 Return to School Criteria is met OR an alternative diagnosis from a medical professional is received by the campus nurse. Please report your child’s absence to the campus nurse. Please do not give fever reducing medication and send your child to school.
When a parent/guardian is called regarding an ill student at school, the parent/guardian must arrange for the student to be picked up in a timely manner (within 30-60 min). Please plan accordingly, and have a responsible adult who is willing and available to pick up your child. In the event you need to send someone that is not in your emergency contact list, make sure that you have communicated who the person is with the campus.
A student displaying COVID-19 symptoms will be isolated in the clinic or other designated isolation area with a mask in place until your arrival.
Continuously make sure all contact and emergency contact phone numbers are updated in the student information system. Please place your child’s campus phone number in the contacts on your phone. This will ensure calls from the campus are recognized.
Students exhibiting signs or symptoms of illness will not, under any circumstance, be allowed to walk or bike home, ride the bus, or utilize a ride service.
The District is asking that parents follow the recommendations set forth by the CDC, Texas State Department of Health Services(DSHS), and Texas Education Agency(TEA) and have your child wear a face covering when developmentally appropriate. If there is a medical condition that prohibits your child from wearing a face covering, please contact the school nurse.
Please be sure your child washes or sanitizes his/her hands before leaving home for the school day.
