MESSAGE

FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT

October 15, 2021

Hello, Bear Families!

As we move closer to the beginning of the second quarter of this school year, I want to thank you for your continued support as we strive to keep our students and staff healthy and in our classrooms learning.

I can't wait to see everyone at our homecoming varsity football game tonight at Serpentini Stadium. As a reminder, we will crown our king and queen prior to the start of the game. I know our Marching Band also has an exciting halftime performance planned for our community as well. I wish all of our high school students attending the homecoming dance tomorrow evening a safe and fun time. It's a great weekend to be a North Royalton Bear!

Board of Education Members on Way to Earning Prestigious Recognition

At the October 12 Board of Education regular meeting, President Heidi Dolezal reported that Board members Jackie Arendt and Anne Reinkober are well on their way to achieving a prestigious award from the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA).   It is an award that Dolezal received in 2003.  The S.T. A.R. Award replaces the previous Master Board Member Award.  Board members earn a letter after demonstrating achievements in certain categories.  S for Service, T for Training, A for Aptitude, and R for recognition.  After attaining all four letters, they receive the award.  Jackie Arendt has accomplished the requirements for the “A” (for Aptitude) and Anne Reinkober has earned the “T” (for Training).

“There is so much training given by OSBA covering many different boardsmanship topics,” said Dolezal.  “All of this is so we can become better Board members and also become well-rounded and knowledgeable regarding the education of the students at North Royalton City Schools.   The voters and constituents of our District expect this excellence, involvement and dedication from members of the North Royalton Board of Education.”

North Royalton City Schools Changing Birthdate Cutoff for Kindergarten Eligibility

Beginning with the 2022-23 school year, North Royalton City Schools will be changing the birthdate cutoff for age eligibility to enroll in kindergarten. Currently, the District requires children to be five (5) by September 30 of the upcoming school year. This birth date cut-off will change to August 1 beginning with the 2022-23 school year. Children will now need to be five (5) by August 1 in order to enroll in kindergarten.

There are several reasons for this change. All students entering kindergarten will be at least five (5) years old. Child development is more in line with the increasing academic, social, and emotional demands being expected of the District’s youngest learners. In addition, many neighboring communities, including St. Albert the Great already have August 1 as their cut-off date. “This is important because, as we have seen in the past, families begin to think of our kindergarten as a preschool, which impacts the breadth of instruction that must be delivered,” said Director of Pupil Services Julie Bogden, North Royalton City Schools. “We realize this will be a change for our community. It is our belief that this change leverages all children with the long-term foundation needed for strong academic success.”

Board of Elections to Use North Royalton Elementary School as Voting Location/No School for Elementary Students

The Board of Elections has requested the use of the elementary building on November 2, 2021, election day. Due to the number of people that will be coming in and out of the building that day, as well as parking, it was decided that November 2, 2021, will be a non-school day for elementary students only (preschool through grade 4) and a work day for elementary staff. The amended calendar reflecting this change for elementary students was approved at the September 13, 2021, Board of Education meeting.

In addition, the Stadium Foundation raised money to purchase and install a new video scoreboard over the summer. “We appreciate the ongoing support of our community and area businesses and organizations,” said Laub. “Our stadium is home to hundreds of competitions and performances each year and our goal is to provide the best experience possible for everyone.”

North Royalton Stadium Foundation was honored to recognize these 23 major sponsors of the current $450,000 fundraising effort to provide new turf in 2023. Fourth Graders Enjoy Spirit Night at North Royalton Middle School

More than 220 fourth graders were bused to North Royalton Middle School (NRMS) on Tuesday, September 21, for Spirit Night. The cheerleaders and mascot Gibby welcomed the four school buses filled with students to the campus.

Students enjoyed watching the seventh-grade football team take on Hudson and the chance to go to the concession stand, many for the first time at Serpentini Stadium!  The North Royalton High School Bears’ softball team ran the concessions for the event.

“This was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience a middle school extracurricular activity,” said NRES Lead Principal Kirk Pavelich. “We feel it makes the transition to the next level that much smoother when an event like this allows our students to visit the building, meet student leaders and middle school staff, all while enjoying the chance to root on the Bears.”

This marked the fifth time North Royalton elementary students have participated in Fourth Grade Spirit Night, as the event originated in 2016.

Middle School Honor Society

Students Inducted into North Royalton Middle School Honor Society

The North Royalton Middle School (NRMS) Honor Society Induction Ceremony was held on Thursday, September 23. The NRMS Honor Society is an honorary organization for students who have exemplified strong academic achievement, extracurricular participation and community service involvement during their middle school years. To be eligible, students must have earned a 3.5 cumulative grade point average during their fifth and sixth-grade years and the first three quarters of their seventh-grade year. Finally, they had to demonstrate that they followed the “Bear Way” at NRMS through the completion of an essay in addition to application forms during the fourth quarter of their seventh-grade year. The values that make up the “Bear Way” are doing what’s right, doing the best you can, and treating others as you would like to be treated.

Community Attends North Royalton Health and Wellness Fair on September 25

As conversations surrounding health and wellness have become increasingly prevalent throughout the course of the past year-and-a-half, residents across the area attended the annual North Royalton Health Fair & Family Expo on September 25. The event was hosted at North Royalton High School and emceed by NRHS English teacher Jonathan Dietrich.

Residents participated in a Family Bear Walk marked with entertaining, interactive stations for those of all ages to engage with. As a complementary pancake and sausage breakfast was provided, those in attendance enjoyed all the door prizes, raffle drawings, and the chance to meet both the Jump Yard’s mascot and North Royalton Schools’ bear mascot, Gibby.

In order to give back to the community, non-perishable food donations were collected for the North Royalton Food Bank. Additionally, as a way to help surrounding areas amid a time in which the country is experiencing an immense blood shortage, citizens had the opportunity to give blood.

University Hospitals Parma Medical Center and Southwest General hosted free health screenings for a variety of concerns, and health care representatives were available to discuss personal worries or risks. With visits from important community figures, including the North Royalton Police, Fire, and Safety departments, appearances also were made by lovable dogs from Lake Erie Labrador Retriever Rescue and Southwest General Healing Paws.
