This week has taken us from the shouts of hosanna and the waving of palm branches on Sunday to today, Maundy Thursday, when we remember Jesus’ Last Supper with his disciples.

Maundy Thursday, April 1

Maundy Thursday Tenebrae Service
with Communion
7:30 p.m. online at www.bit.ly/FPCworship
as well as via Facebook Live and YouTube (www.bit.ly/fpcvideos)

Prelude begins at 7:15 p.m.

Maundy Thursday takes its name from the Latin mandatum novum do vobis: “a new commandment I give to you.” This new commandment, given by Jesus when—during supper, he washed the disciples’ feet—was “to love one another just as I have loved you.” It is his example and thus our call to love and serve that we recall on this day.

Our Maundy Thursday online service will follow the ancient Office of Tenebrae (from the Latin for “shadows”).

As our pastors read the Passion narrative texts and extinguish candles, this service will portray the progression from light to darkness in the passion of Jesus, beginning with his abandonment on Thursday and concluding with his crucifixion.

As is traditional on Maundy Thursday, we will also be celebrating the Lord’s Supper during the service. We invite you to have some bread and juice on hand so that we might together take part, from our own homes, in this shared meal.
This Friday we observe the most solemn day on the church calendar.

Good Friday, April 2

Good Friday Service
7:30 p.m. online at www.bit.ly/FPCworship
as well as via Facebook Live and YouTube (www.bit.ly/fpcvideos)

Prelude begins at 7:20 p.m.

Meditations on each of the Seven Last Words of Christ—offered by our pastors—will guide our Good Friday worship service online this year.

The service will conclude with the church bells tolling 33 times—once for each of the years of Jesus’ life at the time he was crucified—followed by the extinguishing of the Christ candle.
Our Holy Week journey, which takes us from the Last Supper to the cross, will ultimately lead us to the tomb, as together we keep vigil on Holy Saturday.

Holy Saturday, April 3
Easter Vigil
8:00 p.m. via Zoom
For Zoom details, register at www.bit.ly/eastervigil21

Have you registered for the Easter Vigil yet?

This Vigil service will only be available via Zoom, so please be sure to register to receive the Zoom link.

Then join us via Zoom for this ancient tradition of the church, the Easter Vigil, which invites us into the story of salvation as we mark the conclusion of Lent and the dawning of Easter. We will hear readings from the story of salvation, from creation through redemption.

During this service we will remember our baptism and also celebrate together from our own homes the Lord’s Supper, and so we invite you to have bread and juice on hand before joining us online.

There are a few additional things you might gather as well that will help you to participate most fully:

  • a candle, which you can light (if it is safe to do so) as a way for spreading the light of Christ
  • a noisemaker for celebrating the resurrection (this could be keys on a key ring, or a bell, or percussion of any kind)
  • a small bowl of water for remembering our baptism
  • the bread and juice for sharing Communion
We hope you and your loved ones near and far will join us online on Easter Sunday as we gather in festive celebration of the resurrection of the Lord!

“Generosity as a Spiritual Practice”

Tuesdays, April 13–May 4
6:00 p.m. via Zoom
For Zoom details, register at www.bit.ly/generosity0421

A new four-week series, “Generosity as a Spiritual Practice” examines how generosity can enrich our lives and deepen our faith. Offering insights and lively discussion on ways to live generously in a spirit of abundance, each 90-minute session will focus on one chapter of the book edited by Adam J. Copeland, Beyond the Offering Plate: A Holistic Approach to Stewardship.

A Fourth Church pastor will present concepts from the chapter and offer insights into how we might integrate them into our spiritual practices. Small groups will then break out for interaction, reflection, and to foster trust and sharing as we explore how different faith traditions and family cultural backgrounds affect our relationship with generosity and faith.

Purchasing the book is suggested but not required. It is available in e-reader or print formats at www.christianbooks.com and elsewhere.
