Patient Spotlight: Prashant Praveen
"My transplant journey began last summer when I was told that my kidneys are failing rapidly and that I would soon need to start dialysis. On very strong recommendations from friends and coworkers in the area, we reached out to the Kidney Transplant program at Weill Cornell to learn more about the transplant process. From day one, the team at Weill Cornell was fantastic at helping us navigate this overwhelming process. When we found a willing donor (my aunt living in India), the team helped us obtain a visa for her and scheduled all her tests within a week of her arrival in USA. Unfortunately, my aunt wasn’t a direct match, but the team guided us through the paired donation program and helped coordinate with National Kidney Registry to set up a surgery for my aunt in late March. Unfortunately due to COVID-19, her surgery was delayed indefinitely. The team at Weill-Cornell, in coordination with NKR, assisted in immediately transferring my aunt’s medical records to another hospital in Washington DC (who were still continuing their transplant program) so that she could donate prior to the expiration of her visa. Thanks to the entire team, my aunt was able to donate on my behalf on May 6th. Leading up to my surgery on August 26th, I was tested for Covid-19 several times, and again on the day of my discharge. Throughout my stay at the hospital after the surgery, the team of doctors and nurses did a great job watching my recovery while teaching me how to care for myself once I would go home.
They had me walking the next day and taught me how to take care of my new kidney (including quizzing me about each of the medications). My recovery is going great so far, as I am now able to resume my normal life including being able to run and walk two miles every morning! I would highly recommend the team at Weill Cornell/ NYP as they have done an incredible job making me feel safe during these uncertain times."

The 2020 NYC National Kidney Walk
The National Kidney Foundation NYC Kidney Walk may have functioned a little differently this year because it was COVID-Safe and held virtually. Our team decided to mask up, #laceup, and walk 3.7 miles for the 37 million people living with kidney disease. Thank you to everyone who supported our team. All the donations provide the National Kidney Foundation opportunity to reach high-risk individuals in the greater NY area, increase early diagnosis, improve patients' quality of life and implement services that help individuals in need of a kidney.
