While serving as the executive director for the Community Arts Center in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, I had the honor of booking Sir Ken Robinson to speak at the 2008 Governor’s Awards for the Arts celebration.
I spent a spot of time with Ken on the day of the event and found him to be a singularly insightful person with regards to the frightening trend in education to limit the growth of creativity in students.
I have been a lifelong proponent of the importance of arts in education, and most people who know me will tell you that I am quick to jump on a soapbox to defend the arts in schools at every opportunity. American creativity has been a proven advantage to the development of our economy over the past couple of centuries.
If we do not nurture the enjoyment of art, music, dance, and theatre in our students, we will very quickly lose our advantage. The Historical Society of Martin County is dedicated to providing a wide assortment of cultural engagements for students of all ages, and our success will be measured by the creative growth and smiles of our guests.

We will be offering a vivid demonstration of our efforts to provide meaningful experiences for the young, creative minds of our community when we open our latest exhibit "Animators, Artists & Multimedia Giants." The exhibition features the work of Carter Goodrich. He is the character designer for Despicable Me, Ratatouille, Finding Nemo, Shrek, Hotel Transylvania, Brave, Open Season, Coco, as well as seventeen New Yorker magazine covers.
The other featured artists are award-winning illustrators, designers, authors, and animators. Interestingly enough, many of these artists grew up as "paint outside the lines" students whose creativity controlled their daily thought processes and eventually became their love, and their career! They are living, breathing proof of the importance of encouraging arts in education. The exhibit is comprised of a multitude of cartoon art and an elaborate "Makerspace" that allows our guests to create and print 3-D designs, animate their own short videos, and create their own paper engineering projects.
We are offering a million heartfelt thanks to Janeen Mason, curator of the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta, Florida, for creating this magnificent exhibit, and sharing it with Martin County families. Janeen is one of the absolute shining stars of the art scene in Florida, and we are thrilled to be enjoying her talents and her beautiful heart! You may or may not be aware that Albert Einstein’s philosophical talents rivaled his talents in the field of physics. This marvelous man shared a host of profound words of wisdom in his life, and he did so with great passion and wit. The picture and quote say it all. If I were a bit younger, I would consider having this tattooed somewhere on my body where my mother would never find it!
All of us at the Historical Society of Martin County have been thrilled by the large number of families who have been frequenting our museums during the challenges of 2020. We recognize, with a smile and a wink, that it is imperative that parents with young children get out of the house for any purpose during this unusual chapter in history…before someone gets hurt. We couldn’t be happier that you are coming to visit us!
And remember, you have two more Mondays to take advantage of our "Mental Health Mondays" August 2020 promotion where we having been granting free admission every Monday this month at both the Elliott Museum and the House of Refuge. We are determined to be creative in our approach to stir up fun in the halls of our museums, and we invite you along for the ride.

The stations will be broadcasting live from the Elliott and the event also is featured on their website.
Bring your pride and joy ride to the next Cars & Coffee or just come and schmooze with other car owners and enjoy the outdoor ambiance. Held in the Elliott Museum's parking lot, the event showcases an amazing display of different makes, models and years of vehicles. This event is free and open to everyone. Coffee and donuts are provided at a nominal charge.

Be sure to catch the Bulldog Breed British Bikes Exhibit |
|
You have until September 13 to see this impressive private collection of 22 classic British motorcycles. The bikes span the 1930s to the 1970s and represent famous makers such as Triumph, Norton and BSA along with rare makes that include Matchless, Royal Enfield and Velocette. The exhibit includes timeless collectibles including the Triumph Bonneville and Norton Commando and also will showcase the world class Café racers from famed English manufacturers.

While enjoying live music and refreshments, you'll also be able to take in the work of two local artists. Mark Stall will be the featured fine art photographer along with Chad Periman and his recycled, repurposed mixed media assemblage art. |
