MFGA eBulletin - August 2020
From the Desk of MFGA Executive Director
Well, we finally did it. And, I don't mean at all to suggest we procrastinated in our decision. In fact, how we were going to safely and effectively host our 2020 MFGA Regen Ag Conference in times of COVID-19 has been a serious and constantly-moving discussion we have been having ever since we first-turned the calendar on 2020 and started learning more about the pandemic's potential to the world. Rather than wretch about what a great event 2020 MFGA Regen Ag Conference could have been with an all-star line-up of global regenerative agriculture speakers, we have gone out of our way to keep them all on board. Instead of having you locked down at your computer for 2.5 days, we are going to try and motivate and inform you for an hour or two every Thursday night in November. And we plan to showcase the dickens out of regenerative agriculture, our conference sponsors and trade show supporters in the process. All in all, the glass is definitely half full here, please do learn more below and join us. Oh...and did I mention it's free? ☺
On other fronts, MFGA Aquanty Model's Oak River Scenario project final report was recently delivered to Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development. We thank our partners at MB AgRD, Minister Hon. Blaine Pedersen and Deputy Minister Dori Gingera-Beauchemin and we look forward to working more with you and your team on using the model results - including the ability of grasslands, healthy soils and wetlands in buffering the impact of floods and droughts for producers, livestock and rural communities especially during years of extremes where one year is wet and the following is dry.
Also, it was nice to see MHHC's Tim Sopuck quoted in a Manitoba Cooperator article on the Growing Outcomes in Watersheds (GROW) Trust that many of the producer-managed lands for livestock herds are often delivering the most ecosystem benefits for society and are perhaps wrongly termed as "marginal land" in light of the incredible values they provide to society, livestock and wildlife. We could not agree more, Tim. Healthy soils and healthy lands need to be celebrated as such. Many of our MFGA families have led incredibly productive, happy and profitable lives on these kinds of lands.

Boyd's Regen Ag Tour at South Glanton Farms draws full interest
The first of what is hoped to be two or three MFGA regenerative agriculture farm tours leading up to the 2020 MFGA Regen Ag Conference in November was held in late July as 98 socially-distanced attendees toured the Boyd family's South Glanton Farm (SGF) operations near Forrest, MB. Ryan Boyd, MFGA finance chair/conference chair/2019 Nuffield Scholar took the COVID-capped-at-100 assembled group on a U-Drive-With-Who-You-Came-With afternoon tour of SGF farm fields to learn more about regenerative ag practices around herbicide and fertilizer reduction, spring grazing, winter feed, ultra high stock density grazing, cover crops, yearling grazing, manure distribution, water systems and grazing utilization among other matters. Plans for the second MFGA Tour are in the mix however given recent times, we will withhold announcing until the end of September date draws closer or needs to be rescheduled.

Minister Pedersen visits Chapman Farms for producer consultation
Hon. Blaine Pedersen, Minister Manitoba Agriculture and Resource Development, recently visited Chapman Farms located just south of Virden to gather information and guidance from producers and industry on priority areas which include: reviewing Business Risk Management (BRM) Programs, identify market challenges and opportunities, exploring new technologies and building a resilient future. Western Producer: Silage Handling and Storage
The word silage comes from the Greek word "siros" - a pit or hole in the ground used to store corn. Archaeological evidence indicates the Greeks and Egyptians were utilizing silage to feed livestock possibly as far back as 2000 BC. We have learned a lot in the last 4,000 years of silage making, especially during the last decade when a quantum leap in the understanding of fermentation science occurred. Still, the fundamentals of fermentation have never changed. Read on.
Sheep Refusal to Eat Hay
At this time of year, as the hay crop is coming off, many forage specialists are suggesting and promoting the importance of forage testing. Forage testing is a very important tool that helps you quantify the quality of your forage feed and to balance that supply with necessary requirements during the feeding season. Winter Feed Cost Comparison Calculator - Regional Trends And Opportunities
August 24, 2020 by Beef Research3
Feed prices are driven by supply, demand and the price of alternatives. Winter feed presents the largest variable cost for producers. As producers look for ways to protect margins and minimize losses this fall, there are opportunities to be found in examining low-cost feed alternatives. The Beef Cattle Research Council's Winter Feed Cost Comparison Calculator is a decision-making tool that helps producers compare the cost of feed alternatives available in their area. Read the full article.
