New Roxbury School Budget to Bring Small Tax Increase
The owners of a $300,000 house in Roxbury will pay about $5,124 in school taxes, about $138 more than they currently pay, under a budget approved Monday by the township school board.  Meeting remotely for the second time due to COVID-19 restrictions, the board adopted a nearly $81.5 million spending plan for 2020/2021. The budget calls for about $57.6 million to be raised by taxes.  It sets forth an estimated school tax rate of $1.708 per $100 of a property's assessed valuation.

"A big takeaway here is our reduction in state aid of $1,559,954," said Roxbury Schools Business Administrator Joseph Mondanaro. "Roxbury, over the next five years, is projected to lose more than $6 million" in state aid.  Mondanaro said the cut in Roxbury's share of state money is due to a 2018 law that modified New Jersey's school funding formula.  "We are also aware of a few recent bills that the state Senate passed in response to COVID-19," he said.

One, S-2338, extended the state's fiscal year until Sept. 30. Mondanaro said the governor will be submitting a revised budget on August 25, noting, "It is more than likely that his revised budget will include a reduction in education appropriations."

Mondanaro said he and Roxbury Schools Superintendent Loretta Radulic "have already begun to identify projects that we may have to forgo next year."  Click here  to read more from Tap Into Roxbury. Click here to view the 20/21 budget presentation from Monday night's meeting.

Jefferson School Celebrates Worldwide Gratitude Day

Music teacher Devin Wason encouraged her students to sing, dance, write a poem, or draw pictures to help commemorate the day. "The goal is to share your art on any social media for the movement #LeanOnUs."

Roxbury Rescinds Closure of Community Garden
Closed earlier this month as part of the township's effort to thwart the spread of COVID-19, the Roxbury Community Garden will re-open tomorrow (May 1) with restrictions.

"As we promised at our last meeting, we have revisited our decision to close the Community Garden which we know provides a much needed outlet for residents as well as a source of fresh produce," said Roxbury Mayor Bob DeFillippo on Tuesday.

The main restrictions involved in the re-opening of the garden - situated on Eyland Avenue in Succasunna - involve wearing protective masks and gloves and maintaining safe distance from others, said DeFillippo and Roxbury Councilman Fred Hall. They said no more than five people will be allowed in the garden at once. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Morris County Re-Opens Some Parks and Trails
The Morris County Park Commission will have a partial reopening of its 38 distinct park facilities on Saturday thanks to an order issued today by Gov. Phil Murphy, who reopened state parks and allowed county parks to also reopen but only if they can allow for proper social distancing.  In Morris County, many trails and grounds of county parks managed by the Morris County Park Commission will reopen, including all four county golf courses.

(Editor's note: The re-opened trails include the portion of the West Morris Greenway Trail that begins at Horseshoe Lake Park in Roxbury and goes south through Randolph to Chester.)  Click here to read more about what's open and still closed from TAPinto Roxbury.

"No longer working on the front line in the healthcare system, I sometimes feel like I am not doing enough," she wrote. "What these doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, medical assistants, techs are doing daily to fight this pandemic is truly inspirational."

She launched the site a week ago and raised more than $1,000 in the first day.  Groner planned to run in this year's Pittsburgh Marathon on May 3. That event has been canceled due to the coronavirus, but runners are being urged to participate in "virtual" marathons. Click here to read more from TAPinto Roxbury.

Lake Hopatcong Veterans Cruise for 2020 - June 27
The date has been set as Saturday, June 27th for the 5th Annual Veterans Cruise on Lake Hopatcong, and that means the scramble for seats has already started for this special tribute to our veterans - America's heroes.  Each year Lake Hopatcong Cruises honors our veterans from the lake's four border towns - Hopatcong, Jefferson, Mount Arlington, and Roxbury - with a two-hour complimentary cruise around the lake, and a special tribute is paid to the veterans throughout the cruise as residents line the bridges and docks with waving flags in honor of the service that they have provided to our country.  This event is extremely popular with the Veterans and will fill quickly, so please contact your appropriate town representative to have your name added to the list as soon as possible. Last year in Hopatcong the first-come-first-served list filled within days and overflowed into a long waiting list. Click here to read more from Hopatcong Lake Regional News.

Lake Hopatong Block Party will now be held on Oct. 10
The annual Lake Hopatcong Block Party has been moved to Saturday, Oct. 10.   "As was announced earlier, in following the CDC directive on public gatherings, we unfortunately cannot hold the Lake Hopatcong Block Party on May 9," a statement from Lee Moreau of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation states.

"We are now moving forward on rescheduling the Lake Hopatcong Block Party to Saturday, October 10, the day before the LHF Lake Loop, also at Hopatcong State Park," he said.

"For those who have already responded requesting a refund, those checks will be issued April 13 and put into the mail.   Thank you for being a part of the Lake Hopatcong Block Party, and please stay safe and healthy," he said. Click here to read this coverage from the Roxbury Register.
