City Council Recognizes April as Autism Awareness Month
Mayor Troy Brumbalow and City Council recognized the efforts of the Cumming Police Department in April to support two local nonprofit organizations that work with individuals with autism. The Cumming PD had a special badge designed in honor of Autism Awareness Month, which officers wore and gave out to individuals in exchange for a donation to either Creative Enterprises Forsyth or LEAPS Therapy Clinic. The PD also held Lunch for Cause on Friday, April 16th at Marie's Italian Deli, in which police officers and Mayor Troy Brumbalow served guests and even tossed a few pizzas. All tips earned by the officers and mayor, and 15 percent of all sales for the day, went to the two organizations. A second fundraiser, Family Day at the Fairgrounds, is planned for Sunday, May 9th, from 1-5 p.m. Admission to this event is $5 for adults (kids are free!). Bring the whole family out for lots of fun, including games, inflatables, face painting, "dunk-a-cop" dunking booth, Disney characters, and more!

During the April Work Session and Regular Meeting, City Council also:

  • Awarded the following for the Cumming City Center project: Installation of plantings in the stream buffer to Tri-Scapes; residential landscape buffer for the back side of the property along Ramey Drive to Watson Landscaping; and Buildings L & M landscape buffer to Watson Landscaping.

  • Approved advertising of the Cumming City Center on the billboard near the city's mini park in downtown for a reduced monthly rate of $500. The typical rate is $1,500 per month.

  • Approved a change order which will allow for additional floor drains to be added to the parking deck at the Cumming City Center.

  • Approved a request from the Cumming Utilities Department to advertise for proposals to move a segment of sewer line that is in conflict with the southwest cloverleaf for Hwy. 369/GA 400 improvement project, and request that either the Georgia Department of Transportation or Forsyth County reimburse the City 100 percent of the cost of the project.

  • Approved an emergency repair to replace a damaged bearing that was discovered to have cracked during a recent renovation project at the Department of Utilities' Water Treatment Facility.

  • Approved decommissioning of an old Habersham waste water pumping station and connecting the sewer to new gravity sewer.

  • Approved an intergovernmental agreement with Forsyth County for creation of a Land Bank Authority, which could be utilized to acquire tax delinquent properties in order to foster the public purpose of returning property which is non-revenue- generating and non-tax-producing to an effective utilization status in order to provide housing, new industry, and jobs for the community.

  • Approved, in a 3-1 vote with Councilwoman Linda Ledbetter opposed and Councilman Christopher Light recused, an annexation request from Hopewell Group, LLC. and rezoning of the 42.24 acres on Canton Highway to City Planned Unit Development (PUD) per the development plan dated 4/19/21 and 47 zoning conditions.

  • Postponed a decision on a Conditional Use Permit for Advantage Boat Center to establish an open storage facility as a principal use on property zoned Planned Shopping Center. Council will revisit the issue after the applicant can provide a revised site plan.

  • Discussed the City's Small Cell Ordinance in light of concerns from some council members relating to the aesthetics of some of these structures which have recently been placed in town. Attorney Kevin Tallant advised that the current ordinance already has a section covering the aesthetics of the poles, which just needs to be better enforced. Utilities Director Jon Heard said his department will begin following up on the poles after they are installed to ensure the aesthetics are in line with the ordinance requirements.
