Things Change.
As we discussed this past Sunday, as we started to trace out all of the different covenants that God makes with us throughout the Scriptures – it is important to see that the Bible is One Big Story. And, as a Story that will progress and unfold over time, things will change.
 
The Bible Is Not a Flat Book of Truth.
 
All too often, Christians read the Bible as a Flat Book of Truth. It is common to hear things like, “The Bible says it, and that settles it”. But while the Bible is God’s Inspired Word, we have to read the Bible for what it is – an unfolding story! And as an unfolding story, things will change! We cannot read every line of the Bible in the same way. No, we need to read each line within the context of the Larger Story.
 
God’s Commands Change Over Time.
 
For instance, one aspect of the covenant that God made with Abraham was that every male in his family was required to be circumcised. This was to be a sign of the covenant, a sign of their faith and trust in God. However, by the time we get to the New Testament, this is no longer required for the People of God. In fact, there are times when the Apostle Paul will outright forbid it! (see Galatians 5:1-6) The point being -- the Bible is an unfolding story, and as an unfolding story, things will change over time.
 
God Invites Us to Enter the Story.
 
The point of reading the Bible is not simply to learn all of the rules we are supposed to follow. The point of reading the Bible is not simply to accumulate all of the right information and correct facts. No, the point of reading the Bible is to meet the Living God through the Person of Jesus by His Holy Spirt as we enter into the Story of God. 
 
So, may we see that God desires to know us, and to be known by us.  May we see that God invites us, not into a religious system, but into a relationship… and that He is calling each one of us to participate in the Story that is presented to us in the Scriptures. And, if we enter into this Story that changes over time, we too will change over time.
 
May we walk in the Image of God this week!

Scripture of the Week
Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV) -- “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing!”

Spread the word... life is happening. A really special baby dedication this past Sunday... a great first teaching on the "Big Picture of Scripture" by Arnie, and a youth group that has kicked off like gangbusters!

I had the privilege of briefly helping out with the youth group the last 2 Sunday nights, and there is a lot of excitement going on there!

The last two weeks there were 18 teenagers there, tons of energy, great conversations, fun and laughter, seeking God in worship, and studying the scriptures.

Continue to pray for Ray & Kathy Blackburn, and their youth leadership team as they make an impact not only on our teens, but our teen's friends! Spread the word!
