Treat-or-Treat Silver Spring Drive: Saturday, October 30, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Participating businesses offer treats for kids in the company of at least one parent or guardian on the Saturday before Halloween. There’s something “sweet-in-stores” for everyone on Silver Spring Drive. Event hosted by the Merchants of Whitefish Bay.

Village Trick-or-Treat: Sunday, October 31, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. throughout the Village. Block parties are not permitted the day of Trick-or-Treat.
When is prescription drug take back day? The next National Rx Take Back Day will be October 23, 2021. This event is a safe, convenient, and responsible way to dispose of unused or expired prescription drugs at locations in communities throughout the country. The event will be at Whitefish Bay Village Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on October 23, 2021.
When is the next brush chipper collection? Brush/Chipper material will be collected by Village crews this week (beginning Monday, October 18).

Loose Leaf Collection Instructions: |
|
When Will Loose Leaf Pick-Up Begin? Public Works begins loose leaf collection this Monday, October 18 (weather permitting). Collection is typically weekly, but there is no specific collection schedule. Collection is dependent on crew availability and the volume of leaves that need to be collected.
Important Update - Village Requests Residents NOT Use Leaf Collection / Yard Waste Bags: In October 2021 the Whitefish Bay Public Works Department crews will begin collecting leaves and yard waste placed in the roadway curb area by Village residents. This year, the Village requests that residents do not put leaves and yard waste in leaf collection bags.
Where Do I Place My Leaves? Leaves should be placed near or in the curb of the street. Please place leaves away from storm inlets as leaf decay can clog storm sewers and add unwanted material to Lake Michigan.
Can I Throw Yard Waste in the Leaf Pile? The Village encourages property owners to throw certain yard waste material (yard waste is plant material such as flowers and garden material; grass clippings are not permitted) in the leaf piles to preclude a separate yard waste pick-up. Branches, sticks, and other woody material should not be placed with the leaves and should be left on the boulevard/parkway for chipping.
What Does the Village Do With the Leaves? Most of the leaves are temporarily stored and composted at a DNR monitored site shared with the City of Glendale. They are hauled away by a private sod grower and used as sod bedding material.
When Is the Last Day That Leaves or Yard Waste Will Be Picked Up? The DPW will run yard waste crews to pick-up leaves until the first significant snowfall or through the first week in December.
Yard Waste Material Drop Site: Residents with yard waste material after collection has finished (and throughout the winter months) may dispose of it at the Shorewood Transfer Station. Click here for cost information. The transfer station is located at 3801 N Morris Boulevard in Shorewood. It is open:
- December to March - 1st Saturday of each month (only), 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
- April to November - 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Don’t feel like raking? That’s okay! The Village of Whitefish Bay encourages residents to mulch leaves! Why? There are many benefits: soil enrichment, water conservation, etc. Tips for mulching:
- Keep your mower blade sharp
- Set your mower blade to 2.5 inches high
- Mow leaves when dry to prevent clumping
- Push lawnmower slowly to give mower time to chop up leaves
- Mow leaves when there is no more than 1 inch of leaf litter
- When adding mulch to gardens, do not put mulch right up to the base of plants or trees and make the mulch no deeper than 2 to 3 inches
- If your lawnmower bags yard waste, either remove the bag to spread mulch evenly over the lawn, or use the bagged mulch where necessary around trees, shrubs and gardens
- You may be able to convert your mower to a mulching mower by purchasing a mulching blade retrofit kit which is available at hardware stores and garden centers; mulching blades chop up leaves many times, producing very small leaf pieces
- If you use a lawn service, ask them to leaf mulch

Don't Warm Up Your Car Unattended:
It’s that time of year again, it’s getting cold outside. The Police Department is seeing a number of cars unattended running in driveways.
We ask that you do not leave your keys in an unattended, unlocked, and running vehicle.
Thieves can walk up to your car, get in, and drive off in a matter of 5 seconds.

Keep Your Property Safe:
As we approach the fall and winter seasons, the Police Department asks that you be particularly vigilant in making sure that the keys are out of your vehicle(s) and that they are secured. The Police Department also asks that you leave exterior lights on at night. A well-lit property is a deterrent to thieves and it assists our officers in monitoring your property.
At night, Police Department third shift Officers are watching out for the community. When an Officer sees an open car door, a dome light on, or an open garage door they will do their best to secure the property.
Some residents may have found brochures in their unlocked cars or garages from the Police Department informing them of the #9pmROUTINE.
At 9:00 pm make it a routine to:

- Lock Your Doors
- Lock Your Windows

The Great Pumpkin Festival: |

Save the date for Whitefish Bay's favorite fall tradition -The Great Pumpkin Festival. Enjoy music, food, and drinks nightly while you view the amazing pumpkins decorated and carved by your Whitefish Bay neighbors! Take a stroll through the 'Frightfish Bay' Halloween displays and check out the artistic giant-pumpkins carved by local master carvers
Dates: Wednesday, October 27, to Saturday, October 30, 2021, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. nightly. Sunday, October 31, 2021, there will be a lighted display only from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with no activities.
Locale: Old School House Park (5240 N. Marlborough)
Details: Help decorate Whitefish Bay's iconic park with carved pumpkins during this festive, fall tradition! Beginning Saturday, October 23, drive up to our convenient, self-service pumpkin pick-up on North Idlewild Avenue. Choose your favorite pumpkin from the patch. Next, take your pumpkin home to carve, it's time to be creative! Be sure to include a hole in the bottom, about 3-4 in diameter so it can be lit up. Then, starting Wednesday, October 27, bring your pumpkin back and we will display your creation for all to see! Carved or decorated pumpkins can be dropped off at the same North Idlewild Avenue location. Volunteers will be on-site nightly from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to prepare the lighted display.

Incoming 2022-2023 4-Year-Old Kindergarten Virtual Visits at Cumberland and Richards Elementary Schools:
Whitefish Bay Resident families of students who turn four on or before September 1, 2022 are invited to a Virtual 4K Overview at Cumberland or Richards Elementary School on Friday, December 10, 2021. This event will be hosted by the Elementary School Principals and include a welcome from the 4K teachers, a short story with the Library Media Specialists, and a Question and Answer session. Contact Cumberland (414-963-3943) or Richards (414-963-3951) with any questions. 4K Enrollment will open on Monday, December 13, 2021.
Enrollment forms are available in the main office at Cumberland or Richards and on the elementary schools Registration/Enrollment webpage at wfbschools.com. Families that submit completed enrollment paperwork (including proof of residency and verification of your child’s original birth certificate) by noon on January 7, 2022 will be included in a random drawing for placement in the morning session.

Friends of the Whitefish Bay
Public Library Book Sale Returns:

We’re back! The November Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library book sale returns the first full weekend in November. The sale will happen at the Library, located at 5420 N. Marlborough Drive.
On Friday, November 5, our usual Friends Night – for Friends of the Whitefish Bay Public Library - will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. If you’re not a Friend, you can join Friday night and attend the Friday night sale for as little as $15 annually.
On Saturday, November 6, our hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. And on Sunday, November 7, join us from noon to 3 p.m. for our popular bag sale. Fill a bag for $5. We supply the bags!
We postponed our last 3 book sales due to the pandemic. But now we feel it’s safe for customers, volunteers and library personnel to take part in our November sale. We recommend that masks be worn. But we will not require or enforce mask wearing. All sale workers will be masked. Masks will be provided as will hand sanitizer. We also recommend that you monitor the status of the sale at WFBLibrary.org to make sure the sale will still be held. If the pandemic becomes more serious than it is now, the sale may be cancelled.
We’re excited about resuming our semi-annual sales which help raise money to supplement the wide range of activities at the Library including reading programs, computer equipment purchases, guest speakers, furniture and much more.
Thanks to the generosity of the community, we have a tremendous selection of gently-used books, DVDs and CDs. Books are sorted fiction versus non-fiction. Fiction offerings are alphabetized by author. Non-fiction books are for sale by category. So if you have a favorite author, or are looking for just the right book, you’ll find it all at the Book Sale.

NSHD Healthy Highlight 10/12/21 - Staying Healthy This Fall:
HEALTHY FALL TIPS:
- SCREENINGS: schedule preventative screenings and yearly checkups.
- FLU SHOT: the annual flu shot is the best protection against the flu.
- COVID-19 BOOSTER: if you are eligible for the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine booster (see eligibility here), get vaccinated! The flu shot and COVID-19 booster can be administered at the same time.
- HANDWASHING: use soap and clean, warm running water for 20 seconds.
- GET ENOUGH SLEEP: aim for at least 7 hours of sleep a night for adults.
- EAT HEALTHY: work fall fruits and vegetables into your diet.
- SWAP SWEETS: swap sugary treats with a lower calorie alternative or a piece of fresh fruit.
- DINE-IN: instead of going out for dinner, make some cozy and nutritious meals at home.
- DRINK WATER: autumn coffees and ciders can add-in extra sugar, opt for water instead!
- MOVE MORE: aim for 150 minutes (2 and a half hours) of moderate aerobic activity each week.
- VITAMIN D: talk to your medical provider on how to increase Vitamin D during colder months.
- DON’T FORGET THE SUNSCREEN: use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15.
- MOISTURIZE YOUR SKIN: as colder temperatures dry out skin, moisturize and drink more water!
- GET FRESH AIR: as cold weather sends us indoors, remember to step outside and get fresh air.
- BRUSH YOUR TEETH: brush those pearly whites twice a day.
- DON’T USE TOBACCO: if you need help quitting, call 1-800-QUIT-NOW for free support.
If you haven’t already, get your flu shot: Flu vaccination is the best defense against infection. The CDC recommends annual flu vaccinations for all persons aged 6 months and older. The flu is different from a cold; the flu comes on suddenly whereas a cold is gradual. Flu symptoms can include:
- fever* or feeling feverish/chills
- cough
- sore throat
- runny or stuffy nose
- muscle or body aches
- headaches
- some people may have vomiting and diarrhea (more common in children than adults)
- *It is important to note that not everyone with flu will have a fever.
