The good news is the HEB business community survived what could go down as the most tumultuous year in history. The other good news is in this first quarter of 2021 our economy should be enhanced by a second round of $900 Billion in Stimulus Cares Act Fund monies to support small businesses and citizens. It has seemed to be “feast or famine” for businesses with those selling groceries, essential items and home products faring the best with those featuring “non-essential” products not performing as well. Good, positive examples in Hurst this quarter include Richland Sewing Center and Texas Leisure Pools & Spas. Both are doing so well that they doubled and tripled their store space to allow for greater inventory levels to meet the demand. Over 700 Hurst businesses received much needed stimulus funding in 2020 and many have now applied for the second round. These opportunities are available through PPP, EIDL and Tarrant County small business loans and grants.
Hurst was fortunate in that new business growth in 2020 was surprisingly as active as it has been in past years. There were 132 new business openings and expansions occupying 433,473 square feet. Highlighted openings included Hobby Lobby, Tuesday Morning, the expansion and relocation of Conn’s Home Plus, Shoe Carnival, 17 bay Caliber Auto Care, Candlewood Suites and the opening of the Provision of North Valentine apartment complex. With the November 3 election, Hurst citizens voted in favor of allowing packaged liquor stores. Look for announcements on new packaged liquor stores soon.
New residential development continues to be the most active of the real estate sectors as 80-100,000 people move to DFW each year and need housing. DFW has led the country in new apartment construction for 10 consecutive years! Suburbs like Hurst continue to enjoy that expansion as well as the Provision at North Valentine apartments opened last January, the $20 Million Provision at Patriot Place (pictured above) hopes to open late Spring and the Gala at Central Park, a new senior independent living complex, is now under construction and scheduled to open in 12 months.

During 2020, we were fortunate to issue commercial permits with a total value of over $61 million. We also issued certificates of occupancy to 83 new businesses. These included locally owned small companies to chain restaurants like Mod Pizza and Torchy’s Tacos. The companies were from all sectors, including medical and law offices, retail, warehouse and distribution, and a national construction company called Modular Design that is on the cutting edge of commercial construction technology. Among the new companies were 15 restaurants new to Euless or that changed ownership. Several of these new restaurants on located on E. Harwood Road near S.H. 360, including the new Bear Creek Bistro.
There were over a 100 single family permits issued in three subdivisions: Lonestar Estates located at 2 Westpark Way and Pipeline Rd; Ash Lane Estates located at Ash Lane, east of Main Street; and Founders Park, located south of Airport Freeway and east of FM 157.
During 2020, Glade Parks continued to add new retailers and restaurants. Anchored by Belk Department Store and the 132-room ALOFT Hotel, other retailers include Navy Credit Union (pictured above) Dick’s Sporting Goods, Boot Barn, and DSW Shoe Warehouse. New openings included Torchy’s Taco and First Watch Café. Across the street, the 85-room La Quinta Del Sol and 173-room dual branded Home2Suites/TRU are open. An 95-room Comfort Inn and Suites is under construction on Airport Freeway.
In our industrially zoned areas, 2 businesses involved in manufacturing, and distribution and warehousing occupied their new buildings.
COVID-19 has, and continues to, impact our local business community. We feel for everyone and support shopping locally. In coordination with Tarrant County we are here to try and do what we can to help our business community.

The City of Bedford is proud to announce that Andrea Roy, the former Director of Economic Development for the Town of Flower Mound, recently joined the City of Bedford as Development Director. Ms. Roy holds a bachelors degree from Texas Tech University and a masters degree from the University of Oklahoma. During her tenure in Flower Mound, she was responsible for recruiting thousands of jobs, contributing to a significant increase in sales taxes. Before joining Flower Mound, Roy worked for several other Texas cities over her nearly twenty-five-year career, including Coppell, Arlington, and Carrollton. She has had tremendous success working with new development, as well as redevelopment, and with her planning and development experience, she has hit the ground running in her new role. Please join us in welcoming Ms. Andrea Roy. Click here for press release.
Despite the COVID troubles of 2020, Bedford businesses were resilient and were able to adapt to the rapidly changing landscape during the pandemic. Businesses embraced solutions that were not previously considered part of their normal business operation. The City worked with local businesses toward a common goal of survival and success, and many Bedford businesses reported unexpected success during the final calendar quarter of 2020.
New business openings in Bedford in late 2020 were consistent and included entertainment locations, specialty stores, retail convenience and a variety of medical specialty stores.
On November 3, 2020, the referendum to allow packaged liquor sales in Bedford went to vote before Bedford citizens. The item passed with an overwhelming majority. Bedford residents that currently travel to nearby cities’ locations for their packaged liquor needs will soon have at least three Bedford locations to choose from. Goody Goody Liquor, Spec’s Wines, Spirits & Finer Foods, and Liquor Depot have all applied for, and been granted, zoning changes to operate in Bedford. Initial estimates indicate that having liquor stores in Bedford could add 25-40 new local jobs and generate approximately $300,000 in annual sales tax revenue.

The Hurst Euless Bedford Economic Development Foundation is a partnership of the cities of Hurst, Euless, Bedford, the HEB Chamber of Commerce, and the HEB Independent School District. The Foundation markets the three cities primarily though trade shows, professional associations and meetings with commercial real estate developers. A primary focus of this foundation is retaining area businesses which, outside of supportive partners, is a primary source of funding. For more information, please contact Managing Director Mary Frazior at 817/540-1053.
