Hi all,

Last month I told you all about a musical I co-wrote, Breathe — which chronicles the lives of five couples during the pandemic, and the struggles they face with their relationships, health, family, and community as a result of it. I am so proud of this work, and tickets are on sale NOW…and here’s the best part — you can watch it in your own home beginning 5/14. Since a lot of my fans have been asking questions, here are some answers!

Q: Why did you write a musical?
A: It’s sort of like when you are a marathon runner and you decide you want to take up swimming. You’re still getting exercise…you’re just using a different part of your body. Writing for musical theatre lets me work in a collaborative zone (unlike writing novels) and it’s a great way to stretch my abilities.

Q: What’s this musical about?
A: 2020. What it felt like to be isolated, but experiencing the same struggles and losses as everyone else.

Q: Is it depressing?
A: Nope. You will laugh, a lot…and you will also have space to reflect on loss. Told in a series of interconnected vignettes, you’ll move from romantic comedy to the insanity of parenting during Covid to the movement for racial justice to the cost of having to say goodbye to those you love.

Q: Who stars in it?
A: Tony Award winners Kelli O’Hara (The King and I) and Brian Stokes Mitchell (Ragtime), Tony nominee Denée Benton (Natasha, Pierre & the Great Comet), Rúben J. Carbajal (Hamilton), Daniel Yearwood (Hamilton), T. Oliver Reid (Once On This Island), Josh Davis (Beautiful), Patti Murin (Frozen), Colin Donnell (Almost Famous), Matt Doyle (Company) and Max Clayton (Moulin Rouge). I know, right?

Q: Not sold yet. Can I hear some of the music?
A: Yes. Here are two sample clips; click to listen: sample 1 sample 2

Q: Can I order the cast album?
A: Yes, it will be ready for downloading the same day as the premiere. You can sign up at the website by clicking here.

Q: How can I watch Breathe?
A: You purchase a ticket by clicking here. Streaming begins on 5/14, but you will be able to watch it anytime between 5/14 and 7/2 (if you purchase a regular ticket; you can also sign up for a special premiere night and a birthday-night watch with me). Once you click on the link you will be able to watch the video 3x within 48 hours.

Q: Can I listen on my phone/tablet/computer/smart TV?
A: Yes.

Q: I live in England/South Africa/Australia. Can I watch?
A: Yes.

Q: Why haven’t I bought my ticket yet?
A: Frankly, I have no idea. :)

I promise that if you watch this show, you will find yourself somewhere in the characters…and you will feel hope — after a year of not feeling much of that. I can’t wait to hear your comments.

XO
Jodi

Written as the Covid-19 pandemic unfolded, Breathe follows five couples grappling with the virus’s impact on their lives, families, relationships, society, and health. Conceived and written by New York Times best-selling novelist Jodi Picoult and playwright Timothy Allen McDonald, and directed by Tony Award-nominee Jeff Calhoun, Breathe consists of five interlocking suites, with music and lyrics from five songwriting teams. By turns funny and heartbreaking, unbelievable and all-too-real, Breathe is an unprecedented musical chronicling an unprecedented time.

You can choose from three ticket options:
•     a ticket to stream it anytime from 5/14-7/2, at your leisure
•     a ticket for the premiere on 5/14 with a live cast and creative talkback;
•     JODI NIGHT – my birthday (5/19), where we will all watch the streamed performance together, and you can join me afterward for a talkback.

If your life flashed before your eyes, what would you see?
Who would you see?
Is it the one who got away?
What if you had a chance to take the path you didn't take the first time?

Everything changes in a single moment for Dawn Edelstein. She's on a plane when the flight attendant makes an announcement: prepare for a crash landing. She braces herself as thoughts flash through her mind. The shocking thing is, the thoughts are not of her husband, but a man she last saw fifteen years ago: Wyatt Armstrong.

Dawn, miraculously, survives the crash, but so do all the doubts that have suddenly been raised. She has led a good life. Back in Boston, there is her husband, Brian, her beloved daughter, and her work as a death doula, where she helps ease the transition between life and death for patients in hospice.

But somewhere in Egypt is Wyatt Armstrong, who works as an archaeologist unearthing ancient burial sites, a job she once studied for, but was forced to abandon when life suddenly intervened. And now, when it seems that fate is offering her second chances, she is not as sure of the choice she once made.
