COURT REPORTER

Return to Squash (R2S) Updates

The latest update from Dr. Bonnie Henry has extended the current provision and restrictions through to at least the end of the February. Fitting that last week was Groundhog Day as we continue in the pandemic version of “Groundhog Day”. While the curve has been bending down over the last few weeks, “continuing with current restrictions will buy time to flatten the curve, continue vaccinating the public and learn more about variants of concern”. The link to the Provincial Health Order can be found here.

As a reminder, for squash specifically:
  • If the group sport is indoors, only two persons participate – maximum of two people on court, e.g., 2 players or one player and one coach.
  • Participants must maintain a distance of 3 metres from one another while engaged in the group sport, unless the participants reside in the same household.

SQBC is hopeful that by early March some of these restrictions will ease, allowing for small bubble full squash play. Until then promoting drills and skills will make for an easier transition back to full play, there are going to be some very sore players trying to make up for lost time. Keep and eye out for new drills and on-court activity videos and links on Squash BC’s COVID-19 webpage, and in the meantime stay safe and healthy!
Squash BC held its Semi-Annual Meeting on January 30, 2021. It was a huge success, with an excellent turnout.

We wish to thank all the members who attended and offered their valuable contributions throughout.

If you missed the meeting, you can still view a copy of the presentation.
In Memory of Jay Lundy
It is with great sadness that we are announcing the recent passing of Jay Lundy on December 24, 2020.

Jay joined Jericho Tennis Club in 1995 and was active in the squash community, playing in intercity and in-house leagues. Many members know Jay as the key designer and organizer of incredible and iconic Jericho squash events... Including the Canadian Squash Nationals ('best ever' according to Squash Canada officials), Jericho's Sun & Surf, and numerous social events.

As a successful entrepreneur and dedicated volunteer, Jay set ambitious goals for himself and coached others to do the same. He touched the lives of so many people and will be greatly missed.
2 Squash BC Member Clubs Receive
Local Sport Relief Funding
Being a club member of Squash BC has many benefits. In the Fall of 2020, the Province of BC announced the Local Sport Relief Fund, administered by viaSport, to support local sport clubs in need of financial aid as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. As a member in good standing of Squash BC, two of our member clubs were able to apply for and received this much needed funding to help alleviate their financial stress on their operations - Nanaimo Squash Club and the Saanich Squash Association.

Squash BC will continue to watch for and communicate opportunities for our member clubs and others in our effort to support our sport during this pandemic. Watch for information in our e-newsletter as well as direct correspondence to member clubs via email.
