Born in Brooklyn, New York, George Fielding Eliot was an author of historical naval fiction, a commentator, and military analyst. He was a Second Lieutenant in the Australian army in World War I. He became a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and later a Major in the Military Intelligence Reserve of the United States Army. Frank Allen Peake was primarily an inspirational platform entertainer for the Chautauqau Association and the Lyceum Bureau as a lecturer, Shakespearian reader, impersonator, humorist, cornetist, ventriloquist, vocal soloist, teacher, and Presbyterian minister. Highly popular in the mid and late 19th and early 20th centuries, Chautauqua and the lyceum movement were American-centered social organizations devoted to adult education, entertainment and culture with speakers, teachers, musicians, showmen, preachers, and specialists of the day. James Burton Pond (familiarly known as Major Pond; 1838-1903) was an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. For his actions during the Battle of Baxter Springs, he received the Medal of Honor. In 1874, Pond purchased the Lyceum Theatre Lecture Bureau, moved his company to New York City, and embarked on a career managing lecture tours for famous authors and celebrities such as Mark Twain, Winston Churchill, Henry Morton Stanley, P. T. Barnum , Booker T. Washington , Frederick Douglass , Arthur Conan Doyle , Ellen Terry , and Henry Ward Beecher. After Pond's demise, his son, James B. J.B. Priestley was an English novelist, playwright, and broadcaster.  He was one of England's last great writers. Priestley was a member of the last generation of freethinking British "sages" who contemplated both science and philosophy in their literary output. Priestley gained considerable fame as "the voice of the common people", as he was often called, a patriotic radio broadcaster, second in popularity only to Winston Churchill. Elinor Glyn was an English author, journalist and screen writer and best known for Three Weeks (1907) a steamy romance novel which was shocking for its time. She specialised in romantic fiction which was considered scandalous for its time, although her works are relatively tame by modern standards. Her vibrant romances dealt with aristocracy and issues of morality in society. She popularized the concept of the It-girl and had tremendous influence on early 20th-century popular culture and, possibly, on the careers of notable Hollywood stars such as Rudolph Valentino, Gloria Swanson and, especially, Clara Bow.

Inside hinges reinforced.  Scarce deckled (untrimmed) paper on edge and bottom with large margins, plates, sepia aquatints on heavier paper. Plates in very good condition. Offset from plates on text next to the plates as usual and very sporadic text page spotting. Complete with all plates called for including 27 plates - 26 sepia aquatints (6 folding) & 1 line engraving of moose and a folding hand-coloured engraved map of the St. Lawrence. 1907. Superb bold signature and inspirational quote in Latin , penned on a 7 x 4 inches card, in full: "Robt. Peary, U.S.N. June 10, '07 'Inveniam viam aut faciam" ["I shall find my way or make one"].
The phrase has been attributed to Hannibal; when his generals told him it was impossible to cross the Alps by elephant, this was supposedly his response. Light offsetting to margin and some negligible staining, otherwise very good....  Click for more information and photos;

26cm x 20.5cm (10-1/4 x 8 inches), Handwritten letter in Italian, 2 sided, was folded to 8.7cm x 10.5cm (3 x 4-1/8 inches) now flat.  Letters from Leopoldo Cicognara do not often come to market and this 1830 letter to his friend  Zanetti will present more insight into Cicognara.  Some spotting and two right edge pieces of paper are missing affecting a couple of letter in the text, otherwise in good condition... Circa 1885. Quite scarce photo or profile of Noah Shakespeare. Taken in Ottawa when Noah Shakespeare was an MP for Victoria. It is also only photo of him signed we could find. He is most known for being the author of the 1885 Chinese Immigration Act passed in Ottawa.

ALBANY, Dec. 1 (1818) referring to the new boundary line crossing the line 1 mile south of the former line and as such the recently erected fortifications on Rouses Point fall within the province of Lower Canada. Comments on other places south of the new boundary to build a new fortification. A quote from the Montreal Herald announcing the new Fort is on Canada's side of line 45 and thus built on British territory and little doubt who the Fort now belongs to.  This is how the original Fort Montgomery became known as Fort "Blunder" -...  Click for more information and photos;

This June 26, 1812 The Weekly Messenger newspaper contains a declaration of war by James Madison dated 18 June 1812, and a proclamation by Madison confirming war, dated 19 June 1812. The United States declared war on Britain on 18 June 1812. This newspaper was published a little more than 4 weeks after the surrender of Detroit!  Complete in 16 pages, measures 6 x 9-1/2 inches, type small and overall, in very good condition.
