Pastor's Reflection
To Bring Good News

In our readings tomorrow we’ll hear the Prophet’s voice declare the spirit of God is upon them, they’ve been anointed by God. Anointed isn’t a word we use in our daily life, but think of what it feels like to put on a heavy coat in winter or to have water poured over your head at the salon. Anointing is something you feel: a heavy, soaking, penetrating, pervasive, tangible, impossible either to ignore or to hide. The ritual action of baptism is connected with anointing. One who is anointed has been both washed anew and marked for a purpose. The Prophet cries out that this purpose is to bring good news.

Certainly, as we read through the litany of proclamations we see much to celebrate. Liberty, comfort, providence, restoration, and repair. God’s favor is at hand! Yet lurking among this list of joys the prophet includes one line that makes my palms sweaty--vengeance. The day of vengeance of our God, the Prophet says, is on its way. What does it mean? Is this simply the anomaly of an ancient people’s limited ability to understand God without superimposing their own comfort with suffering and violence? Is this meant to balance rejoicing with warning, and if so, to what end? Or is this proclamation of impending vengeance a sign of something divinely inexplicable?

What I’m beginning to wonder is this: What if the day of vengeance God is preparing looks nothing like the vengeance wrought by human potentates… And what if God’s idea of vengeance is the chaining down to hell of pain, grief, sorrow, hunger, starvation, sickness, shame, and degradation… What if the multitude of joys are in fact the agenda for God’s version of vengeance. How such a prospect up-ends everything that seems true about the world we live in, how it thrusts us toward hope, how it makes a merry commotion of joy to consider the delighting love our God is preparing.

Comfort and joy be with you,
Rev. Tom+
