“To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” — 1 Peter 2:21
We are told in 1 Peter 2:21 that Christ left us “an example, that you should follow in his steps.” The Greek word for “example” is a word that means “underwriting.” This was a reference to a parchment on which the 24 letters of the Greek alphabet would be written and go “under” a piece of thinner material on which children learning to write the letters could practice tracing them.
Jesus is our “underwriting” and we are called to copy His life. He is the original and we are to be the tracing paper. Talk about setting the bar high!
While we will not fully achieve living out this example from Jesus in this life (1 John 1:8), we are to strive for it. How can we do that? First, focus on Christ’s death on the cross (Galatians 2:20). Second, when we do sin, be quick to confess and restore fellowship with Jesus (1 John 1:9). Lastly, create accountability about how you live your life with other Christians (James 5:16). God through the Holy Spirit will give us the strength to be obedient.
Let’s never forget that Jesus’ sinlessness is far more meaningful than just an example for us. Because of His sinlessness, He and He alone was qualified to provide a sacrificial death on the cross for the sins of the world.
