PTA Highlights
Dear Riverside Parents,

Congratulations again to the outstanding performances by 4th and 5th graders who participated in our school musical Frozen last weekend.  An enormous thank you goes out to our entire PTA play committee for all their time, work and energy with the kids.

And another congratulations is in order to our 5th grade Battle of the Books team, who competed against five other schools last night and... WON!  Go Riverside!

Our 4th grade Student Leadership Council is helping to support the mission of finding a cure for childhood cancer by asking everyone to participate in "Pennies for Patients."  Please look out for collection boxes in your children's backpacks as we encourage all students to bring them in with donations by January 31st.  Next week, Student Council has created a fun theme for each day of the week to create more awareness and excite students to join their efforts so please see the blurb below under School News for more information.

We have a few other upcoming events to put on your calendars:

Please help reduce the amount of harmful pollution surrounding our school and turn your car off if standing for more than 3 minutes. It's  The Law !
TREX CHALLENGE! - UPDATE
Riverside is making great progress in the Trex Challenge
to recycle the most plastic bags, film and wrap in the Northeast! Since November we've collected over 115 pounds of plastic, which will be recycled into composite decking and other products.  Remember - we can only collect (clean and dry) plastic bags, film and wrap according to these guidelines .
Please NO food (cheese, salad mix or frozen food bags) or snack packaging , except for bread or cereal bags. Keep up the great work!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!
ROCHEL COLEMAN - STORYTELLING
On Wednesday January 22nd, African American storyteller Rochel Coleman returned to Riverside. This year, Mr. Coleman performed  I, Nat Love , a story of an African American cowboy and his journey from enslavement to freedom. For grades K-2, Mr. Coleman focused on the determination and hard work Nat used to achieve his goals. For grades 3-5, the emphasis was on the many changes Nat made during his adventures on the frontier. The students were thoroughly engaged in this historical storytelling experience. This program was organized by the PTA Arts Enrichment Committee thanks to your generous donations to the PTA.

At least six science stations will be set up (one by each grade level) so that parents can participate with their children in a learning activity, directed by teachers on that grade level and others. OFFICE REMINDERS
Please be sure to use the School Dismissal Manager system to record all absences, tardies, early releases or changes to your child's regular dismissal plan.  Please include if your child attends AFTERS or another program at school (i.e. the play) as a recurring absence with the note on which afters class or program they are attending.  Also, please note that parents should not be going to the classrooms to pick up their children.  If you need to pick-up your child(ren) early, you must go straight to the main office and the staff will call for your child.  Parents in the building must always sign in and are to visit only when there is a planned meeting with staff or a classroom event.  The office is available to assist with any other questions or concerns.
FLU SEASON REMINDERS! cold_sneeze.jpg
Flu Season has arrived with a vengeance and our school is getting hit hard right now.  It is imperative that anyone having symptoms be checked immediately. The State mandates that flu cases are reported. In the event your child is diagnosed, please contact the school nurse IMMEDIATELY, as well as provide written confirmation by your Medical Provider.  In order to prevent continued spread of the flu, please adhere to our district's "Five Day Rule Policy," by keeping a child diagnosed with the flu at home for five days. We recognize it's difficult to do so, but it really is necessary to prevent an outbreak.

Please do not hesitate to call or email should you have concerns or questions.  We want to keep everyone healthy and it starts with You.

Thank you on behalf of the Nurse and Entire Staff at Riverside for your compliance.
