It's women's history month!
Women's History Month had its origins as a national celebration in 1981 when Congress passed Pub. L. 97-28 which authorized and requested the President to proclaim the week beginning March 7, 1982 as "Women's History Week." Throughout the next five years, Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as "Women's History Week." In 1987 after being petitioned by the National Women's History Project, Congress passed Pub. L. 100-9 which designated the month of March 1987 as "Women's History Month." Between 1988 and 1994, Congress passed additional resolutions requesting and authorizing the President to proclaim March of each year as Women's History Month. Since 1995, presidents have issued a series of annual proclamations designating the month of March as "Women's History Month." These proclamations celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history in a variety of fields. This week the IHSA 3-point competition was held at Proviso West High School before the Regional playoffs of Whitney Young and St. Rita. Proviso West's own, Jacob Rawlings (11th) came in first of 15 shooters with a score of 10 shots out of 15 opportunities. Give it up for Jacob Rawlings as he will now move forward to the competition again at Sectionals this week.

Hillside Youth Police Academy
March 23-27, 2020 from 6PM-8PM
This program has been developed to reach out to young people from ages 14-17. The goal is to build
positive
relationships between the youth of the community and police officers.
There is
no cost to attend the Academy. All class will be held at the Hillside Police Department. It will be the responsibility of the student to provide transportation each day to the class.
Students will receive a total of 10 service learning
hours at the end of the class.
All applications should be returned to Hillside Police Dept. at 425 Hillside Ave.; Hillside, IL; 60162 or to Det. Bailey, the School's Resource Officer who ca be found in Rm. E114.

IFBW Scholarship Opportunity
My name is Alishia Winkler, Education Chair for the Illinois Federation of Business Women's Clubs (IFBW).
I am excited to announce that
we are awarding six $2,000 scholarships to deserving young women in Illinois. High school seniors, first-time college students and returning college students are eligible to apply.
Scholarship applications are due March 1, 2020, with winners to be notified no later than March 20. If selected, scholarship winners must be willing to participate in our Speak-Off Competition in Champaign, Illinois, on Saturday, May 2, 2020. This contest provides an excellent developmental opportunity for students to network with our members, learn about our organization, and get the experience of speaking before and interviewing with friendly faces.

Service Learning Opportunities
West Cook County Youth Club (WCCYC)
The WCCYC is an after school activity organization that serves Bellwood, IL and the surrounding area. In their continuing effort to improve their services to the community, they are seeking volunteers to help implement the new programs that they have recently created.
All potential volunteers should have the necessary skills to manage grade school age kids in a fun, learning environment. To volunteer, please click

Programs currently being run:
- STEM Club: You would be in charge of implementing simple electronic and mechanical kids and activities. Need to have basic knowledge of math, electrical and mechanical concepts. 1h of volunteer work a week.
- Ping Pong Club: You will introduce the kids as to how to play ping pong the right way, and then lead to in-house competitions. Need to have prior knowledge of ping pong play, game rules and etiquette. 2h of volunteer work a week.
- Pool Club: You will introduce the kids as to how to play pool the right way, and then lead to in-house competitions. Need to have prior knowledge of pool play, game rules and etiquette. 2h of volunteer work a week.
- Homework/Tutoring: You will help students from 2nd to 10th grade with Math, Reading, Spelling & Science homework. You will need to have skills and proficiency in the subject that you are tutoring in. 1-3h of volunteer work a week.
- Reading Club: You will guide members in reading (sometimes out loud), thinking about what they read, and developing a joy for reading. You will need knowledge in reading skills, grammar, reading material variety, concept development and also have a joy for reading. 1h of volunteer work a week.
- Health & Hygiene Club: You will tutor in basic body, dental and bathroom activities, alongside knowledge of germs and disease control. You need to have expertise in the anatomy, germs and disease control, along with healthy habits. 1h of volunteer work a week.
- Environmental Action: You will teach basic earth science material, along with climate, trash, and recycling information. You need to have knowledge of the earth, air and oceans, alongside environmental issues and the direct effects of recycling efforts. 2h of volunteer work a week.

Scholarship Opportunity
Through Proviso Community Bank
Proviso Community Bank, in recognition of the importance of building future civic and business leaders, has established the Scholarship Program. as an active corporate citizen of the communities that we serve, we endeavor to always make a positive difference in the lives of area individuals & families.
Goal of the Program:
The goal of the Scholarship Program is to assist graduating high school seniors in continuing their education beyond high school at a university, college, trade or vocational school. A
$1,000 scholarship will be awarded to 14 graduating seniors from a variety of 14 different high schools in the area.
Eligibility & Selection Criteria:

4. Applicants must have maintained a "B" average, or better, for 7 semesters of high school

7. Applicant's total family annual income may not exceed $65,600; therefore, a family's adjusted gross income per federal income tax documents will need to be provided.
8. Employees of the Hinsdale Bank & Trust Company and members of their immediate families are not eligible.

RISEBio Scholarship
The Research Immersive Scholastic Experience in Biology (RISEbio) program is a unique support and scholarship program available to incoming first year students who demonstrate academic potential and financial need. RISEbio is for those students who are enthusiastic about biology and science, are interested in gaining a mentored research experience, and want to be part of this distinctive model for science education.
RISEbio is a National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program that provides qualifying new students with substantial scholarship funds ($2,500 for 3 semesters; $7,500 total) and the opportunity to engage in an authentic real-world research experiences by exchanging introductory biology laboratory sections for a hands-on mentored research experience. No extra course work is required to participate in RISEbio. RISEbio Scholars will also be part of a learning community that supports transitioning in to college and partake in activities that develop technical and professional skills, which ultimately help scholars springboard into additional research opportunities, internships, graduate/professional schools, and careers.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis
through 2/1/21 although the priority application deadline has passed.
What is RISEBio
RISEbio is a National Science Foundation funded scholarship program that bridges social integration, vertical mentoring, and an authentic research experience to enhance student academic success.
RISEbio gives entering freshman interested in pursuing a degree in biology the opportunity to engage in real-world research with faculty and graduate students. RISEbio scholars also live together in a learning community during their first year and receive $2,500 in scholarship funds for their first three semesters ($7,500 total).
How does RISEbio work?
Prospective students submit an application to become a RISEbio scholar. If selected, you join the RISEbio learning community and select a research stream.
Although you will take the Introductory Biology sequence during your first year, you will exchange course-based laboratories with an authentic research experience. During your first semester, you will take a RISEbio specific research methods course followed by 2 semesters of authentic research. Program Next Steps facilitates additional research and scholarly activities to provide continued academic excellence and training.
What type of research is available?
RISEbio scholars have the option to join 1 of 2 research streams:
(1) Immunity and Cancer - Led by
Dr. Allison Land, the Immunity and Cancer group is working to determine the mechanisms by which host immune proteins that mutagenize viral DNA are kept from damaging cellular genomic DNA
(2) Brain and Behavior - Led by
Dr. Rachel Cohen, the Brain and Behavior group is working to identify novel genes expressed in the brain that control reproductive and aggressive behaviors.
Who qualifies to be a RISEbio Scholar?
To qualify for the RISEbio scholarship program, you must meet several criteria:
- Demonstrated financial need
- A minimum high-school GPA of 2.66 (3.0 preferred)
- Meet minimum ACT sub-scores

Kathryn G. Hansen Scholarship
$500 for the 2020-2021 Academic Year
For the 2020-2021 academic year, one scholarship in the amount of $500 will be awarded. The scholarship is to be used for tuition, fees, books, or other related educational expenses.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
· Be enrolled full time as a high school senior in the 2019-2020 academic year in Illinois, progressing normally toward graduation, and planning to enter college no later than the fall following graduation;
· Have a strong commitment to pursue a higher education in an office professional, secretarial, or business- related field within the State of Illinois with preference given to attendance at the University of Illinois;
· Involvement in co-curricular and community activities;
· Demonstrate academic achievement;
· Be a resident of Illinois;

Why Should I Care About My [P]SAT Score?
What's up with this Exam?
Whenever you are provided the opportunity to take the [P]SAT, you should be present in school. As they say
"Perfect Practice makes Perfect!" The more you take it -- and you are provided 3 opportunities each year -- the more familiar you will be with the exam and the more comfortable you will be taking it when the big official day comes in April of your Junior year when it really counts. No one likes to test, but unfortunately the [P]SAT is a gatekeeper for those who can get: the best scholarship, into the best colleges and even whether you can continue to play sports in college.
We all wanna make the big bucks when we get out into the real world and
college and the amount of education that you have is a leading indicator as to how much you will make one day:
So how do you ensure that you get into that really great college that will allow you to be as successful as possible and can make as much money as possible? It's a result of many factors, but

What You Need to Know About Coronavirus
What is Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)?
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan China.
Can People in the US get COVID-19?
COVID-19 is spreading from person to person in person in Chicago, and limited spread among close contacts has been detected in some countries outside China, including the USA. AT this time, however, this virus is NOT currently spreading in communities in the USA. Right now, the greatest risk of infection is for people in China or people who have traveled to China. Risk of infection is dependent upon exposure. Close contacts of people who are infected are at greater risk of exposure, for example health care workers and close contact of people who are infected with the virus that causes COVID-19. CDC continues to closely monitor the situation.
How can I help protect myself?
The best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.
There are simple everyday preventative actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory viruses. These include:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.
If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should:
- Stay home when you are sick.
- Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
- Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
Is there a vaccine?
There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection it to avoid being exposed to the virus that causes COVID-19.
Is there a treatment?
There is no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 can seek medical care to help relieve symptoms.

The Adobe Creativity Scholarships program is sponsored by Adobe. Since its inception in 2013, Adobe has made a $7 million investment in the program to award 157 scholarships to students from 30 different countries. Creativity Scholars use self-expression and creative problem solving as an opportunity to open minds, to innovate, and to inform the world around them. Our current scholars are pursuing their dreams to become journalists, industrial designers, filmmakers, animators, and educators. All of our current scholars share a commitment to leveraging creativity to inspire change in their communities.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Open to students who will be pursuing undergraduate college/university studies during the 2020-21 academic year. Applicants must be planning to enroll in an accredited college/university degree or certificate program in a creative field or in a field through which they will use creativity as a force for positive social change.
- Applicants do not need to be accepted into a program at the time of application, but if selected for a scholarship, proof of acceptance will be required before scholarship funds can be sent.

- Completed online application form
- A personal written or video statement of approximately 500 words or up to three minutes in length
- An estimate of your expected tuition and fee expenses
- Two (2) reference letters. The letters must come from non-family members who knows you well - for example a teacher, instructor, professor, employer/work supervisor, advisor to an extracurricular club, etc.
- High school transcript issued by the school (for applicants from the United Kingdom or Commonwealth countries, A level, O level, GCSE, or BTEC results are also acceptable)
- Portfolio of up to three examples of your design work. Your portfolio can consist of links to websites you have built and/or links to third-party sites where you have uploaded your work (examples of third-party sites include Behance, YouTube, DailyMotion, Imgur, Dropbox, etc.)

STEM
Scholarship program provides opportunities to students who want to build their talents and change the world! Lockheed Martin will award up to 200 renewable scholarships of $10,000 each. Awards are open to individuals studying eligible engineering or computer science majors, who demonstrate financial need and come from underrepresented or under-served communities. The scholarship program doesn't end with a check. Mentoring opportunities will be a key component of the program, and recipients will also be eligible for Lockheed Martin internship opportunities following their freshman, sophomore or junior year in college.
Eligibility Requirements:
- Must be a current high school senior
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Possess a cumulative 2.5 or higher GPA, or current college freshmen or sophomores with a cumulative 2.5 or higher GPA.
- Planning to enroll full-time at an accredited four-year college or university in the U.S
- Majoring or planning to major in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, Math, Physics, Information Systems/Management Information Systems or Information Assurance
- Demonstrate financial need
- Be willing to consider a paid internship with Lockheed Martin following freshman, sophomore or junior year of college, other circumstances notwithstanding (Note: The internship is not required to receive a scholarship)

Great Gatsby

After reading The Great Gatsby and watching Making the Mob Chicago, students compared Al Capone's rise to power vs. Gatsby's rise to power. As a culminating unit field trip, the classes took an English 3 class on a prohibition tour around the city. They looked at Capone's headquarters, Frank Nitti's vault, St. Valentine's Day Massacre site, as well as a speakeasy style office/area above Frank Nitti's vault. The day was enjoyed by staff and students!

Exam Anxiety
Need some tips on how to deal?
Do you freak out when you know you're going to have to take an exam, or the [P]SAT for example? There are way to manage exam anxiety so that it does NOT hugely impact your performance. Check out some tips:

What is it?
"Test
anxiety is a combination of perceived physiological overarousal, feelings of worry and dread, self-deprecating thoughts, tension, and somatic symptoms that occur during test situations. It is a physiological condition in which people experience extreme stress, anxiety, and discomfort during and/or before taking a test."
"These responses can drastically hinder an individual's ability to perform well and negatively affects their social, emotional and behavioral development and feelings about themselves and school. Test anxiety is prevalent among the student populations of the world."
Symptoms include:
Mental distractions and mental blocks.
You may:
- Have a lot of negative thoughts about failing or not performing well on the test.
- Worry excessively, which interferes with your ability to do well.
- Have trouble concentrating and be distracted by noise.
- Have trouble remembering what you studied.
- Be unable to think effectively about the task.
- Be unable to keep your mind on the test.
- Be worried about other people scoring higher than you and think that you are not smart enough.
You may have physical reactions such as:
- Fidgeting
- Butterflies in your stomach
- Quickened heart rate
- Rapid breathing
- Nausea
- Sweating
- Headaches
- Stomachaches
These symptoms may prevent you from thinking clearly or concentrating on the test.
Test anxiety can be caused by pressure from self or others, past experiences or fear of failure. Those who suffer from it also may feel that they need to achieve a "perfect" score in order to be accepted or feel loved by their parents.
It is important to familiarize yourself with some tips to alleviate the symptoms of anxiety
before taking a test:
- Be aware of your negative thoughts and self-statements and challenge them with logic. For example, you might say to yourself, " I am going to fail." Challenge the statement by saying, "How do I know I will fail?" or "Just because I did not do well on the last exam, does not mean that I will fail this exam." Your self-worth should not depend on a test grade. There is no reward to negative thinking.
- Relax your muscles and breathe. Inhale and exhale to a count of 5. As you do this, you receive more oxygen, thus relaxing you and helping to reactivate your memory. You can also try flexing the muscles in your feet, holding for a count of 10 and then relaxing. Move slowly up through your body contracting and relaxing your muscles.
- Organize yourself mentally and physically. Develop a schedule by marking deadlines and exam dates on a calendar. Be realistic about how much material you can study in one sitting. Schedule short study sessions rather than longer ones. Cramming for the test the night before may cause anxiety. Set aside some time each week to review your notes.
- Creating learning aids can help you prepare for an exam and alleviate your anxiety. Use flashcards, charts, timelines, or outlines. Sometimes looking at things may help you to better remember the material rather than just reading it. You need to know how you learn best and use that to your advantage to help reduce your anxiety. Take a practice test the day before with conditions as much like the real test environment as possible.
- Sleep well the night before the test. Do not try to cram and stay up late drinking caffeine. You are more likely to be tired and irritable the day of the test. Go to sleep early and get up early so you don't have to rush to get to the exam. You can also review key points before the exam. Sit in a location that is free from distraction.
- Sit by yourself and try not to talk to anyone before the test. Anxiety is contagious.
- Approach the exam with confidence. View the exam as an opportunity to show how much you have studied and to receive a reward for all the studying you have done.
- Don't forget to eat. Your brain needs fuel to function. Drink plenty of water. Avoid sugary drinks, which can cause your blood sugar to rise and fall. Caffeinated drinks can increase your anxiety.
During the test you can:
- Read the directions carefully.
- Budget your time.
- Change positions to help you relax. If you feel anxious, practice your relaxation techniques.
- Skip a question if you do not know it or if you go blank. Focus your attention on the test. Don't waste time thinking about not doing well or wondering what others are doing.
- Don't panic if others finish before you. There is no reward for finishing first.
- For essay exams, organize your thoughts in an outline. Start with a short summary or sentence and then make your points.
- For objective exams, think about your own answer first before looking at the choices. Eliminate wrong answers and make a guess. Think about only one question at a time. Review your answers if time permits at the end of the exam.
- If time is running out, concentrate on the questions you know well. Use time allowed for reviewing your answers. Only change answers if you are unsure of yourself.
When the test is over, reward yourself for having tried. Don't go over the test questions with others. There is no point in doing that since you cannot change your answers.
Learning to beat test anxiety takes time, but facing it will help you learn stress management, which can be applied in many situations besides test-taking.

Walking Black History Museum
Did you see it?
The Walking Museum started with a presentation on "Nigeria" presented by Mr. Babatunde Taiwon (Substitute Teacher) with a slide show on countries in Africa. The students were truly intrigued and engaged as the information shared opened their eyes and minds to the continent of Africa.
The Walking Museum continued Tuesday, 2/25/20 through Thursday, 2/27/20 with a live presentation and exhibition of "The Role of the Laundress presented by Tammy Gibson, Historian. The students were truly engaged and intrigued as Ms. Gibson demonstrated and showed illustrations of how the women did the job of a laundress, and even today some people prefer to make their own cleaning products.
The last day of our Walking Museum was on Tuesday, 3/3/2020 with a presentation and exhibits of "Where Hip-Hop Came From and Careers with Hip-Hop" presented by Danta Williams, Multi-Platform Consultant. The students were truly engaged as Mr. Williams did a presentation of the history of hip-hop and how it has changed today. He focused also on how those who were in that industry back in the day have their own businesses today.
Hope you were able to see it and relish in the deep and rich history of Africa and African Americans. The month of February was definitely made all the better by all the culture that was spread throughout the school. Hope you were able to enjoy some of it!
