February 2020
Issue No. 111

It may seem odd to be writing about allergies in February, but the truth is that more and more allergies are not seasonal in nature. Further, the central idea of this month’s emphasis is that there is an increasing number of people who are developing allergies well into adulthood.

Imagine that you suddenly began to sneeze, your nose became congested, your throat began to itch, you developed hives all over your body, then your airways began to constrict, and, worst case scenario, you went into anaphylactic shock?

These kinds of intense or extreme allergic reactions are more commonly associated with children, or with adults who developed or discovered their allergies in childhood. Until recently it was rare for this sort of allergy to develop in people who were in their thirties or forties or older.

Our issue this month offers some thoughts on why this is happening and some suggestions for exercise and diet if you suffer from allergies.

In this month’s insurance article we want to call your attention to Sharecare, a wellness rewards program that is available to the public and gives users a chance, through an app, to track their own wellness and earn points for healthy behavior.

And on a lighter note, we’ve included a bit of humor.

February holds an interesting variety of celebrations, from
Ground Hog day to Valentine’s Day to President’s Day. We hope you are making the most of these days as you mark them, and may you leap into March appreciating the extra day we’ve been given this year – February 29th.
Sharecare — engaging you
for behavioral change
Sharecare is a wellness rewards program with a sophisticated health tracking app that is available to the general public, but is also offered as part of the medical plan from Brethren Insurance Services.

Surprised by adult-onset allergies

Increasing numbers of adults are dismayed to find themselves developing allergies late in life. It used to be that allergies began in childhood and followed the sufferer into adult life. People who were allergy-free as children never expected suddenly to be sneezing, itching, and/or developing hives or a rash when they were well into adulthood.

Exercise, diet, and allergies

There is some evidence showing that exercise and diet can help relieve the symptoms of allergies. Here are some things for you to consider:

For your long-term care needs
Brethren Insurance Services offers Long-Term Care Insurance all through the year.
If you're interested in purchasing coverage, you should know that eligibility for benefits is determined by the inability to meet at least two of these six activities of daily living bathing, eating, dressing, toileting, continence, or transferring. Cognitive impairment can also trigger benefits.

It's difficult to think about the fact that a debilitating condition or a disabling injury might leave you unable to care for yourself, or that when you reach your twilight years, the time will come when you will need some extra care. Long-term care insurance makes sure that you will get the care you need. It helps assure that the cost of your custodial care will not eat up your savings. Finally, and this is one of the best things about LTCI, it can help protect your children and other relatives from having to use their resources to care for you.

Brethren Insurance Services offers Long-Term Care Insurance for all members and employees of the Church of the Brethren and their family and friends; and also for employees of Church of the Brethren-affiliated agencies, organizations, colleges, and retirement communities and their families and friends.
