Bracelets Unite Elementary Students
The HCT purchased 2,550 bracelets for the district's elementary students to support the new OLWEUS anti-bullying program.  The orange and black bracelets say "Support, Report, Defend" to remind students of steps they can take to help prevent bullying.  Many schools have already distributed the bracelets; the rest will be distributed at the schools' kick-off events.

How you can help Puerto Rico?

The collapsed wall of the ruins of an iconic landmark lighthouse is seen in Guanica, Puerto Rico on January 6, 2020, after it was destroyed by an earthquake

Puerto Rico  suffered another 6.0 magnitude earthquake, just a few days after a 6.4 magnitude quake hit the island , leaving the people and infrastructure devastated once again.

Buildings on the southern part of the island have been completely flattened. Homes have been damaged beyond repair. Schools on the island have collapsed, and with continued earthquakes, people are fearful that additional schools, which have already been inspected and have suffered severe damage, will eventually collapse as well. And the already fragile power grid continues to shut off after these massive quakes, leaving the people of Puerto Rico without power.

Students and educators don't know when they will be able to return to their schools  as they wait for them to be determined structurally safe to attend.

The  people of Puerto Rico are once again feeling helpless after a major natural disaster has struck their home, and  they need us.  Can you help?

With college costs skyrocketing to unprecedented levels, two categories of NYSUT members struggle to avoid being overwhelmed by student debt - newer members who recently attended or are currently enrolled in college or graduate programs and middle aged members whose children are now entering higher education. Unfortunately, many members confronting this problem are unaware of the resources available to them to help manage and mitigate student debt burdens. Both of our national organizations, AFT and NEA, offer debt relief counseling and assistance. This workshop will assist members to figure out how to manage the college debt nightmare.

Earnings Limit from NYS Public Employment
After Retirement Increased
Recently, Governor Cuomo signed a bill that raised the allowable earning limit of retirees under 65 to earn from a New York State Public Employer from $30,000 to $35,000. This change is effective January 1, 2020. Any compensation from a New York State Public Employer above $35,000 will cause a negative impact to an individual's public pension. The only exception to this would be if the employer has a waiver issued by the state.
