Cover Crops Kick Off New Agricultural Video Series
In the first video of our new educational "In the Field" series, SWCD Agricultural Specialist and District Technician Blaine Winger joins Dan Schilling, a local farmer, at one of his fields in Springfield Township to take a close look at cover crops. They discuss various cover crop species and their benefits, implementation practices and more.
Strategic Planning Survey Provides Valuable Insight
Mahoning SWCD would like to extend our gratitude to those who participated in our recent strategic planning survey. Based on the survey data, the district plans to focus on the development of practical resources and community engagement opportunities as part of its five-year strategic plan.
Mahoning SWCD Revives Annual Tree Sale - Online
Mahoning SWCD recently announced plans to revive its annual tree sale in partnership with Licking County SWCD. A variety of native trees and shrubs are available for purchase in quantities of 5, 25 and 100, including Ohio buckeye, black walnut and white oak trees, along with white hazel, pawpaw and chokecherry.
Local, State Envirothon Competitions Go Virtual for 2021
The Ohio Envirothon committee has started planning efforts for the 2021 area and state Envirothon competitions, which will both be held virtually this year. Designed to stimulate, reinforce and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources, the Envirothon is a collaborative team event aimed at high school students across Ohio.
Applications Due March 1 for Agricultural Land Tax Breaks
We're glad to serve our county residents by partnering with the Mahoning County auditor's office on its Current Agricultural Usage Valuation Program, which supports farmers and provides tax reductions for agricultural land. Meet Shelly Covert
As Mahoning SWCD’s Administrative Assistant, Shelly assists with day-to-day operations, administrative tasks, community engagement and ongoing initiatives.

Her favorite work-related activity is representing Mahoning SWCD at the Canfield Fair and other events, including the Mahoning River Fest, YSU’s Earth Day Celebration and annual Envirothon competitions. She also enjoys teaching elementary school education programs and assembling informational Powerpoint presentations.
