Prayer Concerns This Week

"First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and thanksgiving be made for everyone, so that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and dignity."  1 Timothy 2:1-2

The Prayer Family for the week is the Wittmann family. Let us be prayerfully aware of Ryan, Olivia, Dawson and Maribelle as well as all our members and friends.

Prayer Concerns: The family of George Tinquist (Uncle of Marilyn Coppolino), Millage Youenger

Long term concerns: Joan Auge; Jacob Basilotto; Tim Carroll; Jonathan Hofstetter; Ed Jung; Brett Lambie; Mary Ann Leach; Despina Koch; Mary McSweeney; Jacob Mendelsohn; Leigh Millar; Melissa Millar; Donna Monica; Dale Norby; Marilyn Powell; Geoff Reilly; Bill Shoppell; Ed Shrum; Linda Lee Smith; Ralph Smith; Ginny Zimmerman; those struggling with addictions and mental illness.

Military: Sarah Davis Brown; Morgan Daniels Colberg; Michael Fahey III; Robin Fiorentino; all those in our nation's service.

From Our Interim Pastor
We start every new year with high hopes and aspirations. For this congregation, 2020 could be the year to welcome the next installed pastor. The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) is hard at work completing all the necessary forms that will allow a thorough search to take place. During times of transition, we are especially grateful for the connectional system from which we benefit as Presbyterians. Presbytery personnel will review and make recommendations to our church profile for maximum effectiveness. Then a Church Leadership Connection website will provide the platform that will grant hundreds (if not thousands) of ordained ministers contemplating a new call access to the details about this congregation that will make contacts possible. That’s how I found out about your search for an interim minister back in the summer of 2018.

This is just one of the many advantages that our Presbyterian connectional system offers.

There are too many benefits to mention, but it’s important to note here some of the helpful resources that we have available, such as publications, conferences, administrative and support staff at the Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly levels, advocacy, representation, and missionary partners around the world, the Presbyterian Historical Society, etc.

All this and more is made possible by every congregation making a contribution, being part of the glue that holds Presbyterians together. Since 1734, Presbyterians have favored a contribution based on the number of active members of a congregation: a set amount per person, or “per head”, thus the Latin term Per Capita . In your box of offering envelopes, you will find one marked for this purpose so that every member can play a role in supporting our system of government, allowing for the coordinating and performing of all the functions necessary for the church’s witness. In order to support all the services of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) at the General Assembly, the Synod of the Northeast, and the Monmouth Presbytery levels, the assessment per member for our congregation this year will be $11,720, that is $40.00 for each of the 293 active members we reported at the end of 2018. While the actual amount may sound high to some people, it’s worth noting that some denominations require a percentage of a congregation’s gross receipts (10%, 15% and even 20% of all offerings and revenues), which for us would be double or triple that amount. And for comparison purposes, at the last congregation I served in central New Jersey as part of the Reformed Church in America, the per member assessment there two years ago was $110.00!

We enter this new year grateful that God has called us to be part of this great denomination. Let us proudly support the many ministries God uses to fulfill God’s great plans for us and for the world.

The 2019 Annual Report is now available in the Narthex or can be read online .

Parents may pick up their children from Sunday School after the meeting.
Organ Choral Festival on Sunday
The American Guild of Organists, Ocean County Chapter, will be having their annual organ and choral festival this Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The festival will take place at Christ Episcopal Church, Washington Street, Toms River.
Souper Bowl of Caring Coming Next Week
Next week, we will be asking you to join us in helping fight hunger through the Souper Bowl of Caring. More than 30 years ago the Souper Bowl of Caring began with a simple prayer from a single youth group: "Lord, even as we enjoy the Super Bowl football game, help us be mindful of those without a bowl of soup to eat." Since that day, more than $143 million has been raised for local charities across the country through Souper Bowl of Caring. It has become a powerful movement that is transforming the time around the Big Game into the nation's largest celebration of giving and serving.

Be part of this movement that is sharing God's love with those in need. Please give generously on Super Bowl Sunday. All canned goods and money collected will be donated to St. Gregory's Pantry which is the local food bank that serves our community. Please bring a canned good or donate to one of the two soup pots the youth will be holding at the doors as you leave worship.

Whether a San Francisco 49ers Fan or a Kansas City Chief's fan, everyone can make a positive difference in the world.

Prayer Chain
Prayer is a way for us to reach out of ourselves, to put aside our loneliness or pain for the sake of another. A prayer chain is a way for people to gain assistance in prayer for any serious and pressing problem. It is also a way for any person to act on God's command to love one another.

We, who are pray-ers for our church's Prayer Chain, invite you to join our Telephone Prayer Chain or our E-mail Prayer Chain and become a vital part of our church's prayer ministry. Do pray your prayers in your own way and in your own time. Always respect their confidentiality. When you receive a request, you pray and then pass the prayer concern onto the next person on the Telephone Chain. If you are using E-mail, you pray for that request. Call Frankie Kunz, 732-892-4223, learn more about being a prayer partner and decide if you'd like to join us. We'd love to have you.
