Save the date: Global One Health Conference will be held virtually
November 5-7

With the theme, “Strengthening Global Resilience Through One Health: A 2020 Vision for a Sustainable Future,” the 2020 Global One Health Conference will take place November 5-7, from 8 a.m.-12 p.m. EST, virtually through Zoom. In this 2020 biennial conference, we aim to bring global stakeholders (campus, local, state, national and international) together to discuss priority global health capacity needs, recent events and progress towards sustained prevention and control of complex global health issues. 9th Annual Global One Health Summer Institute Updates

Over 1,000 individuals from 45 countries have participated in virtual Global One Health Summer Institute so far. The 9th annual institute is distinctive for setting high marks in the variety of trainings (workshops, modules, panel discussions and webinars), the number of collaborating organizations, the number of countries represented and the number of participants. This year’s institute consists of 40 total sessions including 22 internal medicine webinars from Wexner Medical Center which occur from August 4-26. The GOHi team hosted an additional genomics course in partnership our global partners.

GOHi collaborator, Nicole Kraft, is the recipient of prestigious award

Nicole Kraft, associate professor in the School of Communication at Ohio State, was honored with the Outstanding Woman in Journalism and Mass Communication Education Award from the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The award recognizes a woman who has represented women well through personal excellence and high standards in journalism and mass communication education. Kraft's focus in teaching and research has been utilizing iPads and iTunes U to “flip” journalism classrooms and provide a self-contained learning environment for multimedia journalism.

COVID-19 activity updates

Ohio State’s Global One Health initiative (GOHi) with its project, Active Surveillance and Contact Tracing of COVID-19 in Ethiopia, is supporting the country’s response to the current pandemic by hiring 77 qualified health professionals to work with the existing surveillance system throughout the nation. The project addresses the critical shortages in public health workforce and infrastructure and provides intensive online-based training. Funded by the CDC Foundation, this project continues to support active surveillance and contact tracing of individuals with COVID-19 in Ethiopia since June 28.

GOHi fellow spotlight: Achenef Melaku

Achenef Melaku is a senior instructor of Veterinary Pharmacy at The University of Gondar. Currently he is a PhD student in medical microbiology and interested in doing more research in foodborne illnesses, antimicrobial drug resistance and other aspects of microbiology.
