The Fifth Sunday After Pentecost

Psalm 82

"From Wonder to Honest"

Rev. Dr. Andy Mangum

A Message From Our Visiting Minister

When we pray the Lord’s Prayer we pray that God’s will might be done “on Earth as it is in heaven.” Psalm 82 describes in fuller detail just what that prayer might mean for us. The Psalms present a spectrum of prayer postures before God. They express praise, gratitude, lament, complaint, petitions for intercession, and wisdom. Psalm 82 uses theological imagination to suggest what God might say in the midst of a council managing the universe. The Psalm is directed both to God as a prayer for justice and compassion and it is a call to the people enact this vision on earth.

About Rev. Dr. Mangum

Andy Mangum is the Regional Minister and President of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the Southwest—A position he has held since 2017. From Anna Marie...

We will be blessed this coming Sunday to have our Regional Minister, Rev. Dr. Andy Magnum, bring a message from God’s Word. I’m looking forward to hearing his ”take” on Psalm 82. I believe it will be both informative and likely presented with a sense of humor as this man enjoys who he is and what he does. While I recall nothing specific, I can tell you that, some years back, maybe when he was in college, my daughter used to come home from church camp at Disciples Crossing in Athens, Texas just raving about her counselor, Andy. It was clear that she had both had fun and was inspired. Because of this bit of background and from knowing him a bit as Regional Minister, I look forward to both this and his next visit with us.

Thanks from Rev. Harmel

Thank you for being the Light of Jesus in my life.  I will always be grateful for Round Rock Christian Church.  Because of you the Love  and Light of Christ is shared by many people.  Thank you for your support, your gifts ,and your faithfulness and always remembering we love because God first loved us.

What has come into being in him was life and the life was the light of all people. The Light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not over take it.

Hopewell Middle School Supply Drive

The 2022-2023 school year is just around the corner, and, as in the past, the Hopewell Principal (Lynda Garinger) has indicated that many students will still need help with supplies. Hopewell Middle School has requested the continued support of RRCC in providing much needed student school supplies, to begin the school year.

The Principal and Counselors have provided a list of the most needed items and the Outreach Team will purchase the supplies rather than request donations of supplies from RRCC members, to ensure that specific needs are met. Although we do have a budget for Outreach to spend on events and supplies, we are providing an opportunity for additional donations, should anyone be interested in contributing to this worthy cause.

In the five years since we began this project in 2017, we have donated school supplies valued at over $2,700 to the students at Hopewell who need supplies. This will be our 6th year in this partnership, and it is important that the students have the supplies that they need and are engaged academically and know that they are supported by the community. The last two years have been like never before, and this year will surely have its challenges.

Please consider making a contribution to this project with a check or online contribution marked (Hopewell School Supplies) during any week in July. Thank you for your help in supporting the students of Hopewell Middle School, with school supplies, in our on-going effort to "embrace our neighbors with Christ-like love"!

Elders Prayer/Closing Message

Grace and Truth

The one and only Son (Jesus Christ) came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

                                                            John 1:14

Some of us are what we might call “truth people.” We tend to draw lines between right and wrong, and we feel that we have a responsibility to speak up when something doesn’t sound right.

Sometimes this is a gift because God can use us to identify sin and injustice, urging people to bring about change. But sometimes it hurts our relationships because we can focus on the negative and be judgmental, pushing people away.

Meanwhile, some of us are “grace people.” We gravitate toward the idea of God’s love and forgiveness, and we don’t like making a scene or creating conflict. Instead, we try to forgive others and move on.

This too can be a gift because God can use us to bring harmony into tough situations. But we need to be careful not to ignore serious hurts and problems that should be addressed.

In the Bible we learn what God is like in the life and teachings of Jesus. And we see how Jesus brings the practices of grace and truth together. Jesus is infinitely compassionate—willing to forgive all who place their faith in him. At the same time, he is not afraid to speak a hard word of truth to bring someone deeper into faith.

At this time in your life, what do you need from God? Grace? Encouragement? Forgiveness? A word of truth to set you in the right direction?

Prayer:

Lord, thank you for being the God of both grace and truth. Speak whatever words I need to hear in my life in order to grow nearer to you. In His precious name, Amen
