Project Update
Teacher Training Builds Community Around Manufacturing Education
Pete DeLosa, Career & Technical Education, Golden Sierra High School, attended the three recent Train the Trainer sessions sponsored by Sacramento Valley Manufacturing Initiative (SVMI) and Advanced Manufacturing North Region, California Community Colleges (Edu2Mfg.org). "This training was awesome," said DeLosa. "I went home with weeks worth of lesson plans and got to experience going through some of those plans as the student while I was there. It was a great opportunity to make connections with other teachers as well. I really feel like I am developing a community of teachers to learn from and with."

The sessions were organized by Steve Dicus with Dan Frank, Engineering and Advanced Manufacturing teacher, Rocklin High School. For more information about upcoming training, contact Steve Dicus at 916-276-9520.
Fifth Annual CTE Counselor Conference
According to Teri Munger, organizer of the 2020 CTE Counselor Conference and Coordinator, Greater Sac/North Inland CTE Pathways, over 375 people from 67 cities attended the Fifth Annual Career Technical Education (CTE) Counselor Conference. "The free regional event gives attendees knowledge, tools, resources and contacts to effectively guide students and parents on pathways leading to in-demand, regional CTE careers," said Munger. The Advanced Manufacturing North Region supported this event.

Some of the feedback from participants included:
"Great event for counselors. Good information designed for their needs"
"Very helpful to heart about specific programs available in our area."
"I always love hearing from the students and their own stories. It has helped me to make sure I am doing what I need to as a counselor to help my students find their purpose."

Sierra College Hosts Advisory Committee Meetings
Mechatronics -- Tuesday, March 10, 2020 from 6:30 -- 8 PM in the V-127 (V building of Sierra College Rocklin Campus). The primary reason for having this meeting is to ensure that the content of Mechatronics courses is as real-world as possible, explained Tony Osladil, Department Chair, Mechatronics, Sierra College. "We need industry input, especially on which technologies and skills are coming on strong and should therefore be added or enhanced in our program," said Osladil. "We also want to know which skills are becoming less critical and should be pared back."

Advanced Manufacturing -- Sierra College will host an Advanced Manufacturing industry advisory meeting on Wednesday, March 18 from 6 to 8 pm on the Rocklin campus. The college seeks vital input and recommendations from industry partners. The program is currently going through curriculum review for a new Advanced Manufacturing degree program. For more information and to RSVP, contact Rachelle Smith, College & Career Advising, Sierra College Career Education Liaison at 530-320-6347.
'Shop Talk' Calls Build Teacher Network to Share Experiences
Steve Dicus, retired CTE high school teacher and consultant to the Advanced Manufacturing North Region, has been hosting Shop Talk phone calls on a monthly basis. The schedule for the calls varies so more instructors can participate, explained Dicus.

"These calls provide a place for shop teachers to converse and seek input from those experiencing similar situations," said Dicus. "Most, if not all, of these teachers are singletons on their respective campuses. They are running and managing a shop that has its own unique challenges and needs compared to the vast majority of the other teachers on a campus. So, the calls build community among those with experience and those who will possibly encounter similar situations."

Nine teachers have joined in on the calls. If you are a teacher who'd like to share and learn from other CTE and manufacturing instructors, contact Steve Dicus.
