2022 - 2023 Calendar and Bell Schedules
Dear BK Community,

In this Just In Time you will find our 2022-2023 Calendar and our day to day bell schedule. While you review these items, I’d like to point out a few things:

2022 - 2023 Calendar
The 2022-2023 School Year Calendar is likely pretty straightforward and doesn’t need much explanation. However, I think it’s important to point out that the days leading up to and following major vacation holidays should be treated like any other school day. Too many times in the past, we’ve seen a higher rate of absenteeism just before or just after holiday breaks. With our new attendance policy, these absences could potentially affect your child’s final grade. Take note that our Christmas Break does not start until after our last final exam which ends on Tuesday December 20th at 12:00 p.m. PLEASE do us, and your child, a favor and do not schedule vacation departure prior to that date/ time.
2022 - 2023 Bell Schedule
Next year’s Bell Schedule is the same as last year. Below are a few highlights of the schedule.

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s start time is at 8:30 a.m.
  • Tuesday and Thursday are later starts and will begin at 9:00 a.m.
  • We have Block periods on Monday / Tuesday (Block 1) and Thursday / Friday (Block 2). Mid-week on Wednesday, we will have a Straight 7 (Mini-block) where all classes will meet.
  • Every day is a single lunch where all students will have lunch at the same time.
  • Every Tuesday we will have “ER Time” or “Everybody Reads” for 40 minutes where everyone will open a book of their choice and read.
  • Every Thursday we have built in “Community Time” based on common interests. (Our July 20th Just In Time Communication will cover “ER and Community Time” in more detail.)

Staying Organized on a Block Schedule
To help your child stay organized with binders, etc. we would suggest the following:
  • Have two larger 3 inch binders and label them periods 1-3 and 5-6 respectively.
  • Have a third, skinnier binder for period 4 only. Periods 1-3 and 5-6 are always on the same day, but period 4 interchanges with the different block periods in a given week.
What Happens on a Short Week?
Five times each semester we have a shortened week with only 4 school days, rather than 5. When we have these weeks, it affects our block schedule. In order to consistently have 3 touch points per week and per class, we have adopted the following strategy for our bell schedule:
  • The day adjacent to the Monday or Friday day off, will be a late start, Straight 7.
  • An example is Monday, September 5th when there is no school because of Labor Day. Tuesday, September 6th (the adjacent day) will be a 9:00 a.m. start with periods 1-7.
  • Another example is Friday, October 28th which is a no school day because of Faculty Inservice, Therefore, Thursday October 27th (the adjacent day) will be a 9:00 a.m. start, periods 1-7.
  • This strategy not only preserves our late starts on Tuesday and Thursday, but also guarantees that each class will still have 3 meetings in a given week.

If you find any or all of this confusing, keep in mind that you can always just monitor our online calendar where we will have the bell schedules noted for each day of the semester. Additionally, we will remind you of the upcoming week's schedule each Friday of the school year in the BK Alive newsletter.
