News of the Parish
Annual Meeting Details
The Annual Meeting of St. John’s Episcopal Church will be held in the church on February 14, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. There will be a maximum capacity of 100 people allowed in the church for the meeting, but it will also be streamed via Zoom. The Zoom credentials can be found on Realm, or you can email John in the parish office at jedgar@stjohnstampa.org or call him at 259.1570 to receive that information.

If you would like to ask questions on Zoom during the meeting, you can do that by using Zoom’s "chat" feature. Lee Lowry will be on hand to read your questions to the in-person attendees in the church.

Parishioners who plan to attend the meeting on Zoom must vote early or vote by mail. Parishioners who attend on Zoom will not be able to vote during the meeting, so you must plan ahead. Request a vote-by-mail ballot by emailing John at jedgar@stjohnstampa.org or calling him at 259.1570. Parishioners can vote early during regular office hours (Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) from now through February 11, but please call ahead to make sure someone is available in the office to help you. Early voting is also available immediately following Sunday services on January 31 and February 7.

Parishioners who attend the meeting in person on February 14 will be able to vote at the beginning of the meeting, but all parishioners are encouraged to vote early or to vote by mail. The Annual Report will be available at the meeting, and it will also be distributed on Realm and in the Scroll once it is ready
2021 Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Cancelled
Although it will come as no surprise, we are disappointed to announce that the annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper, sponsored by the Fathers Ministry, has been cancelled. We look forward to reinstituting this fun tradition in 2022!
Calling all Techies: Stream Team Volunteers Needed!
When the pandemic began, St. John’s created a "Stream Team" to livestream our Sunday services and research and invest in new technology to improve the quality and viewer experience for parishioners and visitors. Our amazing parish administrator John Edgar has been instrumental in this effort, streaming our 10:00 a.m. services each week for the entire length of the pandemic so far, but now we’d like to expand our Stream Team to include parishioners who have an interest in or experience with technology. This new ministry is a great way to serve and expand your skills!

If you're interested in training to operate our livestream equipment and volunteering at your convenience to stream our services, please contact John Edgar at jedgar@stjohnstampa.org or call the Parish Office at 259.1570.
Sacred Ground: New Group Begins Soon
We are excited to announce that parishioner Laura Cruse will be leading the next Sacred Ground, the film-based dialogue series on race and faith. The series will be held in a small group limited to 15 people and conducted on Zoom in 10 sessions, meeting every other week.

The small group will be invited to walk through chapters of America’s history of race and racism, while weaving in threads of family story, economic class, and political and regional identity. The series is built around a powerful online curriculum of documentary films and readings that focus on Indigenous, Black, Latino, and Asian/Pacific American histories as they intersect with European American histories. Sacred Ground is part of Becoming Beloved Community, The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation, and justice in our personal lives, our ministries, and our society. For more information, visit https://episcopalchurch.org/sacred-ground.

Contact Laura Cruse or Fr. Michael to join.
Ash Wednesday Preparation: Help Wanted
Ash Wednesday will look a little different this year, but ashes will still be imposed. In light of our Bishop’s instructions and the needs of the School, we will be sprinkling ashes on top of heads instead of smudging them on foreheads at services, and allowing parishioners and students to self-impose.

As our Bishop wrote in a communication to the diocese: "Bishop Neil Alexander recently shared a paper with the College of Bishops—the paper reminds us that the imposition of ashes, as we know it today, is a product of liturgical evolution. Bishop Alexander suggests that those who wish to offer the imposition of ashes should do so via the ancient formula of sprinkling ashes upon the head."

Therefore, we will have a packing day on Thursday, February 11, as we need to pack about 550 bags of ashes for School students and church members who attend services but prefer to take them home to self-smudge or sprinkle. Those watching from home can also participate by picking up a bag of ashes ahead of time at the parish office. Please contact John Edgar or Fr. Cannon if you can help.

In light of the pandemic, the Vestry has approved voting for 2021 Vestry candidates by mail. If you would like to receive a ‘Vote-By-Mail’ ballot, please email the parish office at jedgar@stjohnstampa.org or call us at 259.1570 as soon as possible.

Early voting during office hours (Monday through Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) is open now, but please call ahead to make sure someone will be available to help you. Early voting is also available in the parish office immediately following Sunday services on January 31 and on February 7.

Holy Conversations/Holy Relationships
Holy Conversations/Holy Relationships is a six-session small group program focusing on how God is acting in our lives, designed to help participants strengthen their spiritual journey. It will explore the calling we often feel but struggle to understand, the joy that overcomes us when least expected, and the alignment of our secular and spiritual lives.

If you are searching for something more in your religious life, participating in this experience might be a wonderful way to begin your Epiphany. The program will begin in late January. Meeting frequency and times will be determined by each group. Enquirers Class 2021
St. John’s Enquirers Class is an important formational opportunity for all parishioners seeking to deepen their faith. Led by Fr. Cannon, this 10-week course delves into several critical topics through which we understand our faith. Holy Scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, sacraments, prayer, worship, mission, doctrine, and church history will be taught and discussed. The idea is for each participant to come to and strengthen their own faith by better understanding the teachings of the church and its instruments for faithful practice. This course is open to anyone who wants to deepen their faith. All will benefit from the content discussion and group fellowship. This course is required for adults seeking to be baptized, confirmed, or received into The Episcopal Church, and anyone wanting to make a public reaffirmation of their faith. The class begins Sunday, February 7 at 12:30, probably on Zoom until it is safe to gather in the parish hall. The class is free of charge. Please contact John Edgar or Fr. Cannon to enroll.
Wednesday Adult Christian Formation
The Adult Formation Group meets via Zoom each Wednesday from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Topics for study and discussion are suggested by the group, which is currently involved in a study of Cynthia Bourgeault’s book, The Meaning of Mary Magdalene.
