President Signs
Great American Outdoors Act

The Great American Outdoors Act, which was officially signed into law today by the President at a White House ceremony, will usher in a new era of public lands protections and expanded outdoor recreation opportunities across the nation. The Conservation Federation of Missouri commends the overwhelming support from so many elected officials that help make this happen. The law, which was passed by overwhelming bipartisan majorities in Congress earlier this summer, will permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund and will provide up to $1.9 billion a year to address deferred maintenance issues at our national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and other public lands.

"This is an incredible win for wildlife, public lands and waters, and for all Missouri families who enjoy hiking, camping, fishing, hunting or otherwise exploring Missouri's cherished forests and wildlife areas," said Tyler Schwartze, Executive Director of the Conservation Federation of Missouri.

From the Blog:  Sharing the World with Snakes

In late May, while doing scientific research on bird populations near Branson, MO, I was bitten by a copperhead. I was walking along a well-beaten footpath where I had walked countless times. I stopped to clear a few plants and had been standing in the same place for over a minute when I shifted a bit and felt a stinging on my left foot. I looked around for the wasp I had disturbed but saw nothing flying. I looked down at my foot in my Chaco sandal, expecting to see the mark of a wasp sting, but instead, a tiny drop of blood had formed on my second little toe. My confusion changed to slight panic as I noticed the orange and brown patterned snake coiled under some leaves...

Missouri Forestry Summit
Next Week!

The Forest and Woodland Association of Missouri in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Conservation and partner organizations will host a Forestry Summit on August 11 designed to raise awareness of Missouri forest issues.

This conference will benefit foresters, wildlife biologists, educators, landowners and many others that are concerned about the health and needs of Missouri's forests. The information presented will provide a foundation for discussion for the management needs of the state's magnificent forests and woodlands.

While the conference is free, you are welcome to provide a donation through the FWAM Donate and Sponsor menu options. The agenda and registration form can be found by clicking on the link below.
