July 3rd Fireworks

The Cities of Fairway, Roeland Park, Westwood and Westwood Hills are excited to announce the joint July 3rd fireworks show is planned to take place at Bishop Miege at 9:30 pm. The July 3rd fireworks show has been a tradition for many years and we are proud to bring it back together. Thank you to Bishop Miege and the St. Agnes Parish for continuing to partner with us on the show as well.

July 3rd Reminders:
  • Please follow traffic control signs and drive safely!
  • Blankets and chairs are permitted on the grounds of Bishop Miege & St. Agnes.
  • Plan to arrive early to park and secure a spot to watch.
  • Please be respectful of neighbors who live around the area. Do not block driveways or park in no parking zones.


Please read the fireworks code below. The use of the following fireworks are allowed and permitted in the City on the date herein specified (July 4 between the hours noon & 10 pm) and may be possessed throughout the year:

(a) Novelty Snake - a device in the form of a pressed pellet of chemical composition that upon burning produces a snake-like ash that expands in length as the pellet burns. Chemical composition weight in finished device two grams.

(b) Snapper - a paper or plastic wrapped device that contains silver fulminate coated on small bits of sand or gravel. When dropped the device activates, producing a noise effect. Chemical composition weight in finished device 0.001 grams.

(c) Novelty Wire Sparkler or Novelty Dipped Stick - a device that consists of a metal wire or wood dowel coated with a chemical composition that produces a shower of sparks, a colored flame and/or a crackling effect. Chemical composition weight in finished device 25 grams.

(d) Novelty Smoke Device - a device that produces only smoke. Chemical composition weight in finished device five grams.

(e) Fountain, Cone - a device that produces a shower of any combination of colored sparks, color flame, crackle, smoke, and/or micro star effects. Chemical composition weight in finished device 50 grams. Cone fountains with a whistle and/or report are not included in this amendment.

No fireworks may be used or discharged within 100 feet of a gas station or an LP gas storage facility.
2022 Street Maintenance

Roeland Park is set to begin the annual street maintenance program starting on July 11th, 2022. The city identifies streets that are candidates for improvements each year and these selected streets receive a surface treatment that is applied to improve the street surface, extends the life of the street as well as ensures proper drainage. 

Please see the map of the streets/locations where the chipseal will be applied. The contractor will post door hangers on affected residents' doors prior to the work starting. The city appreciates the partnership and patience of residents as we continue to invest in city infrastructure. If you have any questions, please call Public Works at 913-722-5435.
Joint Construction Project

Roeland Park & Mission will be partnering on a joint construction project along Johnson Drive from Lamar Ave. to Roe Blvd. Construction is set to begin on July 11th. Improvements will include curb & gutter replacement, spot sidewalk replacement, new UBAS surface treatment as well as new striping. A new sidewalk will be added on the north side of Johnson Dr within Roeland Park’s boundaries. The construction sequence for the project is anticipated to be the following and is subject to change.
 
  • July 11: Begin concrete removals on South side of Johnson Dr.
  • July 11-15: Complete removal and replacement of concrete on south side of Johnson Dr.
  • July 18: Begin concrete removals on North side of Johnson Dr.
  • July 18-22: Complete removal and replacement. of concrete on north side of Johnson Dr. to approximately Roeland Dr.
  • July 25- 29: Complete removal and replacement of concrete on north side of Johnson Dr. from Roeland Dr. to east end of project.
  • August 1: Asphalt repairs complete in Roeland Park on north side of Road
  • August 8: Macrotextures are completed on Johnson Drive.
  • August 15: Construction finishes on Johnson Drive
  • August 22: Thermoplastic completion of all areas. 
Trash Amnesty Week

For your trash pick up the week of July 5th - July 9th, you can put out unlimited trash bags on your trash pick up day without purchasing bag tags. Please don't put out construction debris.

Bulky item pick up will still occur this week! Up to two bulk items per month may be placed at the curb on your first and third service day each month for "no charge". It is not required, but it is helpful to contact GFL at kccustomercare@gflenv.com or 816-380-5595 to let them know you will be putting out a large item.

NOTE: GFL will collect one day after your regular service day the week of July 4th due to the holiday!

KHAF

The Kansas Homeowners Assistance Fund (KHAF) is available to help eligible Kansas households financially impacted by the pandemic to get current on their mortgages and to avoid foreclosure.

The funds will provide assistance with:
  • Mortgages
  • Property Taxes
  • Homeowners' Insurance
  • Energy Costs

The basic requirements for the program are:
  • You own your home in Kansas and are at least 30 days past due on mortgage or property taxes.
  • The property (a single-family home, one-to-four unit dwelling, condo, townhome, or manufactured home) is your primary residence.
  • Your recent income did not exceed 150 percent of your area’s median income.
  • Your household has experienced financial hardship during the COVID pandemic.
