Senior Project Presentations
Class of 2020
Friday, April 17 at 7pm
Some of our Seniors elect to do an independent senior project where they can delve into a topic that particularly interests or inspires them. The process begins with a proposal in the spring of their 11
th grade year. Once their project is approved, they can work independently and elective class time is provided during the 2
nd & 3
rd quarters of their senior year. Valerie LeBlanc (High School English Teacher) sponsors the overall program and each student has a faculty mentor. The process culminates in a public presentation of the projects for the community.

- Emanuele, Crime, Italian Style: The Mafia

Good News for the Class of 2020!

|
Despite the increasing competitiveness of most colleges and universities, our students continue to stand out in the college admissions process. Our visiting
college representatives frequently remark “I wish I’d gone to a school like this!” after visiting WWS and learning about our curriculum and students.
Below is a
list of college acceptances for Class of 2020 as of today. Many of these come with substantial merit aid. Our students will hear from more schools in the next few weeks and all should have heard by April 1st. Stay tuned!

Day of the Languages - TOMORROW
Thursday, Feb 27, 1-3pm
Against all odds and with performers back to full health, our Day of the Languages celebration will happen on Thursday 2/27, starting at 1pm.
As in previous years, the afternoon will be filled with skits performed in German or Spanish, music, dance, clowning and singing. Parents are invited to watch and at times encouraged to participate in this unique event where students are in charge. They will push the limits of farce, humor, and emotional expression beyond the ordinary. That is why only 7th grade students and up attend this show. The Day of the Languages does not aim to be a perfect display of linguistic and acting skills but rather to be an opportunity to venture in the world of languages in various ways, and to take a leap of faith for the delight of others.

Thank you to Jack Petrash and all the parents who came out to hear Jack speak about his book “Understanding Waldorf Education” on February 1st. We will meet again on Saturday, February 29 from 9:30-11am to continue our conversation. This book explains Waldorf education in a very accessible way and sharing with other parents provides support for parents in the community. Come join us to connect and meet other parents. Copies of the book can be ordered online or checked out from the WWS library. Parents from Acorn Hill, Potomac Crescent, and outside of WWS are warmly welcomed.

Lower School Instrumental Concert
Wednesday 4, 3:30pm
The Lower School instrumental music concert is on
Wednesday, March 4 at 3:30 pm
. All of our instrumental ensembles in grades four through eight including Middle School Guitars and Middle School Recorder Ensemble, will be performing. We hope you're able to join us for an afternoon of timeless classics and fun contemporary selections.
Notes for parents:
- Students should bring concert dress to school that day. They will have time at 3pm to change into concert dress and warm up for the concert.
- Class teachers and music faculty will be aiding in this transition time, so you don't need to pick up your children until after the concert (approximately 4:30 pm).
- If you are unable to attend the concert or pick up at 4:30pm, please make sure your student knows to go to aftercare until 6pm.

Wrapping Up Basketball Season
|
|
The basketball season will come to an official end this weekend. The high school boys team will participate in the 73rd Annual St. Anselm's Invitational. Other schools competing in the tournament include St. Anselm's, Avalon, Cornerstone, Paul Charter, Don Boscoe, Washington Latin and WIS. The boys first game will be Friday 2/28 at 7pm. Saturday and Sunday times will be determined after the games on Friday.

The high school girls basketball team finished first in the PVAC South Division with a PVAC record of 13-3 (19-5 overall record). The girls team was led by seniors Lua, Maria, Josie, and Sonja. This was the girls first South Division Championship win since 2014. Congratulations to the whole team on a great season and job well done!

Learn About Waldorf Teacher Training & Explorations

Information Session on Teacher Training and Explorations
Sunday March 8 at 11am
We are excited to announce the possibility of two new opportunities for further study in Waldorf Education through the Center for Anthroposophy (CFA) to begin in the Fall of 2020. One is a new cohort for Explorations.
The participants from this year's Explorations are finding it engaging and exciting. CFA also hopes to bring Building Bridges to our community. Building Bridges is another step towards a Waldorf teaching certificate or M. Ed. in Waldorf Education from Antioch University.
Please come hear more on March 8th at 11am. Torin and Karine Finser, the current Explorations group, and Debbie Spitulnik will share their experiences and answer questions about the programs. In addition, there will be a gallery showing of the participants' art work from our weekend together. Please contact Debbie (

Faculty Appreciation Luncheon - This Friday, February 28
Thank you to all who are making this event possible by cooking, shopping, serving, and cleaning.
If you have not already, please let your Class PO Rep or the POSC know what dish you will bring so we can keep track! Please bring all ready-to-serve contributions (nothing to reheat or warm) to the carts in the foyer on Friday morning (and remember to pick them up in the afternoon).
Suggested courses:
- Children's Garden: Desserts (i.e. baked goods, truffles, chocolate bars, fruit salad)
- Grades 1-2: Appetizers, each serving 8-10 people (i.e. samosas, pirogues, sushi, crab rolls, shrimp cocktail, hummus, terrine, dumplings, crostini)
- Grades 3-4: 5 Salads each (2 grain or other starch, 1 vegetable, 2 green salads)
- Grade 5: Flowers for arrangements (enough for 1 centerpiece and 6 tables)
- Grades 6, 7 & 8: 8 Entrees each serving 8-10 people (ready to serve at room temperature or in a crockpot to keep warm)
- High School: Desserts and cold drinks (i.e. baked goods, truffles, chocolate bars, fruit salad, Italian sodas, sparkling water)
The main way to help out and thank our faculty and staff is by cooking and bringing a dish for the luncheon .
If you also want to see the feast and help out on Friday this is a great and easy event for volunteering. Maybe you can come at 1pm to catch the end of the luncheon then help us clean up?

GoFundMe Campaign for Praline Staff Victim of Gun Violence
There has been an outpouring of emotion and a desire to respond as our community has learned that
Blanca Coreas, who works at Praline Bakery down the street from WWS, was the victim of gun violence last Saturday. Her teenage son and his friend were killed and Blanca was severely injured by an unknown assailant. Blanca is in the hospital.

Artisan wares, live music, a Spring Faerie’s Grotto, a children's shopping room, family crafts, jump rope making, marionette shows, food trucks, and much more!
Entry price is $2 for everyone over two-years of age.
Admission is free on Friday to adults 21 and up.
