Beloit Memorial High School Newsletter
March-April  2020

Dear Families & Community Members,

Second semester is well underway; it's amazing how quickly the school year is passing by! A new semester brings about new experiences for both students and staff and provides us all the opportunity to reflect on the first half of the year.  Staff use this reflection time to make plans for a great second half of the year, and students are also encouraged to reflect on how they can ensure an even better second half.

Students soon will begin selecting classes for next year. Our counselors and teachers will be working with them to ensure that their choices are aligned to their goals.  Please be watching for information regarding scheduling so that you can talk with your student about their options and encourage them to aim high with the academic path that they set for themselves.

In February, Collegiate Academies were introduced to Beloit Memorial High School and the community.  The Collegiate Academy program allows highly focused and motivated students to accelerate their career by taking advanced coursework, articulated classes, and courses on the campus of Blackhawk Technical College.  Completion of the Collegiate Academy will result in the attainment of a Technical Diploma or an Associates Degree upon high school graduation. Please visit sdb.k12.wi.us/collegiateacademy for more information on this great opportunity for our students.

Second semester is a very busy time.  Please continue to watch for newsletters and emails. As always, if you ever have any questions or general feedback, please let us know.

Thank you for your continued support!

T he Addams Family, a comical feast that embraces the wackiness in every family, features an original story and it's every father's nightmare:  Wednesday Addams, the ultimate princess of darkness, has grown up and fallen in love with a sweet young man from a respectable family - a man her parents have never met.  And if that wasn't upsetting enough, Wednesday confides in her father and begs him not to tell her mother.  Now, Gomez Addams must do something he's never done before - keep a secret from his beloved wife, Morticia.  Everything will change for the whole family on the fateful night they host a dinner for Wednesday's "normal" boyfriend and his parents.

Art
BMHS students in the art department have been very successful this winter, competing favorably in state, and regional juried shows and competitions.

Jazmin Zuniga received an honorable mention for her portfolio of 8 artworks Elena Jame s also got an Honorable Mention for her ink drawing from the WI Scholastic Art Competition. Zaydia Hughes-Taylor was awarded an Honorable Mention and a Silver Key, Arabel Gibso n got a Gold Key, and Gabby Klatt received both an Honorable Mention and a Gold Key for the two sculptures she submitted. Artwork that received a silver or gold key is on display in the Milwaukee Museum of Art until March 15th. This is a state-wide competition, with only 6 percent of the 3800+ pieces receiving a silver key and only 4 percent were awarded gold keys. Both Arabel and Gabbie will now go on to compete nationally. The three students in the show were honored February 8th at the museum.

The very competitive Rockford Area High School show accepted ten works from Beloit students this year, out of the 950 submitted. Gabby Klatt will be showing a paper dress and ceramic sculpture. Elena James will display her 'library', a collection of four books in which she re-illustrated. Zaydia Huges-Taylor has a digital piece selected and Ben Leisher will be showing his charcoal drawing. Sierra Perez reworked Hokasai's famous wave to include charming cats, and Rebekkah DeKok revisited the girl with the pearl earring in a more contemporary fashion. We also will see another paper dress created by Yomali Rangel, Janet Rosas and Nayeli Aviles . Jazmin Zuniga is showing a large charcoal portrait on cardboard and BMHS will also have on display a mixed media sculpture by Natalie Bittner . Please come to the opening of the show at the Rockford Museum of Art on March 15th, from 1 to 3. The show comes down mid April. Both Gabby and Elena won 1 of the 19 awards given to the 13 High Schools!

The Wisconsin Art Education Association art show accepted three BMHS students' artwork for their annual show in the Capitol building in Madison. This year Elena James, Zaydia Hughes-Taylor and Fatima Morales will have work on display and be eligible for a variety of awards. Please come to Madison Friday March 6th from 12 to 1 to see their work displayed.

Please save the date for our annual High School art show at the Beloit Art Center in April. The opening is on the 3rd, and although the Rockford Art Museum show will still have some of our best artwork, there is plenty more fantastic pieces to be appreciated. The opening is from five to eight at 520 E Grand Street.

The art department welcomes Michelle Dalpra. Michelle comes from Rockford Area High Schools with many years of experience and is settling into her classes with aplomb. She brings knowledge of AP studio and working within the academy system.

Ms. Carpenter welcomes anyone interested in the trips to London, Paris and Barcelona this summer, and Japan next summer, to contact her.

Suicide Prevention

The teen years are often marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions-sometimes difficult for teens, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. There is a program entitled SOS (signs of Suicide) that offers some important information regarding the warning signs and risk factors for youth suicide. This is an excellent resource for parents and students to assist in bringing awareness of possible signs of depression or suicidal thinking and, most importantly, what they can do to help themselves or a peer who might be showing signs of emotional distress. The first aid skill that this program uses is called ACT- A cknowledge that you are seeing signs of concern in a friend and that it could be serious. C are- let that person know you care about him or her. T ell a trusted adult in order to bring some help to the person of concern. This information can be so valuable to students in giving them help-seeking skills when they are concerned about a friend or classmate. Often time students are the first to know when a friend or classmate is really having a rough time. Knowing what to do- how to ACT- gives students a helping procedure to care for their friend. They can bring their concern to the attention of adults in order to assess the student in need and get them further support and services if necessary. Please review the parent portal for this program at https://sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning signs and risk factors for youth suicide, to access useful resources, and to learn more about the key message: ACT (Acknowledge, Care, & Tell). As always Beloit Health System is happy to provide continued support and resources to students in need our student based counseling clinic is located at Beloit Memorial High School (1-608-361-3032). We provide counseling appointments to all students of the Beloit School District.

FORWARD EXAM

Students in Grade 10 will be participating in the Forward Exam on April 14th & 16th. Students are tested in the area of social studies.  The Forward Exam measures the knowledge and skills your student should have acquired by the time they reach 10th grade.  Their performance on the assessment will not affect any of their current grades.  Please encourage your son or daughter to take the test seriously and do the best they can.  The results will be used to help school staff make determinations or placement in classes to best support your child.

ACT Aspire Testing

The ACT Aspire test is a State assessment that measures what students have learned in the areas of: English, Reading, Math, Science and Writing. The state requires all 9th and 10th grade students to take the test. We will test those students on April 9th.

Only students taking the test will be allowed in the building during the assigned testing times. There will be no school for all 11th and 12th grade students on April 9th.  More details and schedules to follow.
