Second Grade Heart Dissection
|
As Lakehill second graders kicked off their study of the human body, they were able to participate in a heart dissection in the Middle School Science Lab.
Students received a general overview of the heart and its function in the body, using a hog heart. It is almost identical to the human heart, although much larger.
With the help of their teachers, students worked in teams to open up the pig hearts and look at the different chambers, valves, and vessels. They traced the path of blood through the heart and learned why it is such an important organ.
"The students impressed me with their knowledge and enthusiasm," said Science Chair
Bryna Thomson.
Most students enjoyed the dissection, although some thought the pig hearts were quite "stinky."

The Freshman Class helped spread holiday cheer by volunteering on Saturday, December 14, at the Dallas Arboretum's newest attraction, the Christmas Village.
Each student played an assigned role (such as physician, conductor, postmaster), handing out treats to the guests, and entertaining children in the Village. The Arboretum saw more than 1,800 guests in the four hours the Lakehill students volunteered that evening.
"I loved playing musical instruments with the children who came into the Music Shop in the Christmas Village," said freshman
Hannah Reister. The Arboretum staff complimented the students' professionalism and commitment and encouraged them to volunteer again.

Lakehill's college-aged alumni returned to campus to enjoy a special "Home for the Holidays" celebration in their honor on January 3, and to cheer on the Boys Varsity basketball team in their victory over rival Rockwall Heritage.
This special Warrior tradition allows students, faculty, and staff to catch up with alumni and hear about their successes in college.
This event is a great way to reunite alumni with their Lakehill family and with each other. Thank you to all who came out and joined in the fun!

Senior Spotlight: National Junior Honor Society Highlights Lakehill's Soon-to-be Graduates
|
In an effort to reveal the hidden talents, personalities, and accomplishments of Lakehill's most experienced students, the National Junior Honor Society presents:
NJHS Spotlight on Seniors
This week's senior: Alanna Stern
Alanna Stern has attended Lakehill since the seventh grade. She has excelled in Musical Theater, Drama, academics, and athletics. She is a part of several Upper School clubs, including National Honor Society and Sisteens. She is also Co-President of the Senior Class.
Alanna is a member of the Varsity Basketball and Varsity Track teams. She has earned a spot in the State Track Meet every year of high school, earning a silver medal last year in the 400-meter run. She also shattered two school records as a member of the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams.
Alanna has won the school's Shakespeare Competition twice, as a freshman and, again, as a junior. Additionally, she won the DFW Competition her freshman year, advancing to the National finals in New York City. It is not surprising that her favorite subject is English.
One Alanna's favorite memories from high school is the Biology Trip. Outside the classroom, she enjoys the theater and hanging out with her friends.
Alanna hopes to major in theater or communications and is considering DePaul University, Baylor University, University of Southern California, Texas Christian University, and Chapman University. Her advice for young Warriors is, "Be active around the school, and take advantage of the opportunities that are given to you.”
