Wednesday Lemonade

August 5, 2020
Welcome back to Wednesday Lemonade, a community newsletter focused on keeping VCCA Fellows, staff, and supporters connected.

Today's newsletter is jam-packed with: our last-but-not-least of three introductions to new VCCA board members; an invitation to our seventh virtual event in the VCCA Fireplace Series; Fellow messages from composer Anna Rubin, writer Linda Trice, and visual artist Robin Jebavy; a new Composer Playlist announcement for the month of August; a sweet podcast episode from our neighbors at Sweet Briar College; an art collaboration project and an essay on poetry shared by Virtual VCCA members; and a reminder of ongoing online initiatives.

Let's get to it.

We're looking forward to an evening featuring fiction writer Clifford Garstang and interdisciplinary artist Heidi Kumao hosted by writer and Fellows Council member David Ebenbach.

Clifford Garstang is a former international lawyer and current resident of the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. He is the author of a novel, The Shaman of Turtle Valley, and three story collections, including What the Zhang Boys Know, which won the Library of Virginia Literary Award for Fiction, and the newly released House of the Ancients and Other Stories.

Heidi Kumao creates animations, video installations, photographs, machine art, and fabric works to give physical form to the emotional dynamics underlying ordinary conversations and relationships. Using a feminist lens, she translates these intangible experiences into poetic visual narratives and hybrid art forms.

Fellows, please fill out this form to submit a message. This is a way to tell the VCCA community about how you're navigating these times as an artist and human and to spread the word about work affected by or created during the pandemic.

"Friends, It was so encouraging to receive news of support by New Music USA for a new work, Their Own Words: Voices of Migrant Women, commissioned by the Piano on the Rocks International Festival, Sedona, to premiere Spring 2021. After recording the stories of several women struggling for asylum or other legal status, I'll fashion a narrative for two singers, piano and electronics. This work will be the seed for a full-length opera."

Work Affected by COVID-19

"The premiere of my work Powehi for actor and two pianists was canceled at the Spring 2020 Piano on the Rocks International Festival. My recording project for a new solo CD, which was to include this piece, has therefore also been delayed."
Linda Trice

"A short story of mine appears in Vol. 4, Issue 3 of RIGOROUS, a literary journal edited and written by people of color."

Linda is the author of fiction and nonfiction for adults and for young people.

"Hi Fellows Community! The last time I visited VCCA (to work on painting and collage projects) was last June-July, 2019. Over the past several months I have been thinking of the people I met during my residency who were from places like NY, hoping that they and their loved ones are alright.

I have fond memories of the interesting artists I met at VCCA, and my enormous studio, which was easily four times the size of my space at home! Even though my current space is tiny, my painting practice, teaching at UWM (drawing & painting), and dog keep me calm and engaged during these troubling times (see pic ☺).

I was scheduled to have a show of paintings this summer at the James Watrous Gallery in Madison, WI, but it’s been postponed until summer, 2022. If you are in WI at that time, I hope you can check it out!
I’m also looking forward to a 2022 show of collages at Lake Forest College, IL — a project initiated by Karen Lebergott, a painter I met at VCCA last year. Shortly after my residency, Karen made an appearance at one of my openings! How often does someone say they’ll try to make an event and actually show up, especially someone who lives in another state?! That was so cool and appreciated!

Best wishes everyone and be well."

Sweet Stories in the Dell
A recent Sweet Briar College podcast episode features interviews with Fellow, writer, and Professor of English & Creative Writing Carrie Brown and SBC President Meredith Woo on the "natural synergy" between VCCA and Sweet Briar.

Carrie offers a comprehensive look at the creative partnership between VCCA and the College's new Center for Creativity, Design and the Arts. We particularly love Carrie's stories of past VCCA-SBC collaborations and previous Fellow involvement with the College. Give it a listen.

Fellows Reading Fellows
David Ebenbach passed along an essay by fellow Fellow Katy Didden. Here's an excerpt of an excerpt from "Refuge": "If we cannot crawl inside a poem, I do think poems provide a refuge; poems give us the means to clarify our feelings. I don’t mean to simplify our feelings; I mean that, somehow, the rhythm of poetic speech helps us find a way forward—it sets us in motion. Read More in Virtual VCCA
