Kodiak ROAR, April 9, 2020
Third grade teacher Alex Schilperoort and his family wanted to spread a message of hope to their neighborhood, so they created this mural. He's pictured with his wife, Emily, and their daughter, Ella, who is in pre-kindergarten at CSS. Please share your photos by emailing them to [email protected].

Updates on AP Exams and ACT/SATs
On March 30, Trevor Packer, Senior Vice President of College Board and Head of Advanced Placement, announced radical changes to AP exams this spring. In response to school closures around the world, College Board decided that it will, in fact, administer AP exams online, but will do so on a reduced scale without sacrificing the importance or the integrity of the subject-based exams. CSS has been following this story as it has evolved, monitored the various channels this news has circulated and is in full support of online AP administration in May. Click here to read the full blog post by Sam Gaudet, Associate Head of School.

Faces of CSS: Kaja Reynolds
What is your role at CSS? I am the Visual Arts teacher for grades 3-12. I teach a variety of Art electives in the Upper School such as Ceramics, Jewelry-Making, Printmaking, Video Production, and Digital Photography.

What is one of your favorite memories at CSS? One favorite memory is when guiding a student in class they said, "Mrs. Reynolds, you are like a magician - you are amazing!"

What did you want to be growing up? I wanted to be two things: a musician and an artist. I wasn't sure what kind of artist, but I wanted to become famous for my art! I played the cello when young, and I wanted to learn how to play the guitar and sing so I could be in a band.

What draws you to teaching? I grew up with a Mom as an artist and a Dad as an architect. We often went to museums, and I would think about how I could share my love of art with others. In addition to creating my own artwork, teaching became a rewarding way to share my love of art with young people. I get incredible joy from creating, making, discovering, and exploring different mediums of art, and I wanted to share that passion with students.

What would people be surprised to learn about you? They might be surprised to know that I created my own business, called Mountain Clayworks, where I was a professional potter for 12 years, making and selling my work locally at Commonwheel Artist Co-op in Manitou Springs, as well as making special orders for people such as dinnerware sets, mug sets, etc. Two years ago, I created another business called Colorado Karma Jewelry by Kaja, where I make beaded, leather, and forged copper jewelry, such as earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. I sell my jewelry locally at a wonderful Artists Cooperative called EclecticCO, located in downtown Colorado Springs.

CSS Families Helping During Pandemic
We know many of you are lending your help during this time, and we applaud all of your efforts and are so proud of all of you! Below we highlight a few of our families. If you would like to n ominate a CSS student, alumni, or family, please email the information to [email protected].
Sixth grader Sarah H. '26 (left), her sister, ZoĆ« H. '19 (right), and their mother, Bronwyn H. P'19, P'22, P'26, have sewn more than 100 masks. Sarah even made two masks for El Paso County Coroner and Deputy Director of Public Health, Leon Kelly P'30, P'27.

"My girls and I have been following the random acts of kindness philosophy," Bronwyn said. "If we see a need, we give a mask. So far, we have given to cancer patients, those with underlying conditions in our circle, senior citizens, delivery people, grocery store clerks, our elderly neighbors walking by. We want to spread happiness to folks who don't expect it, as well as spread the word about covering your face."
Seventh grader Chase Z. '25 (left) is using a 3D printer to created mask brackets to donate to the Children's Hospital. Even his brother, 1st grader Caleb Z. '31 (right) is helping by learning to sew masks! Their g randmother is sewing masks as well, and Chase is providing the brackets that hold them on.  "I wanted to help the community during this uncertain time we are in," Chase said.
