Paso Verde Scholars Become Trained Mediators

About 20 6th - 8th-grade scholars at Paso Verde School are serving as peer mediators, helping their classmates resolve conflict while promoting a positive school climate. These students put in the work over the summer with 10 hours of training. In addition to learning how to help others resolve conflict, they also learned how to help others understand the root causes of their dispute and ultimately agree on a plan for resolving the conflict stages:

Each individual mediation consists of six distinct stages:

  1. Agree to Mediate
  2. Storytelling and Gathering Points of View
  3. Focus on Interests and Needs
  4. Create Win-Win Solutions
  5. Evaluate Options
  6. Create an Agreement

The introduction of peer mediation programs in schools and community-serving organizations is based on a model of education that empowers individuals to prevent, resolve, and transform violent and nonviolent conflict by developing the values, attitudes, skills and knowledge to envision alternative options for action towards building peace.

Leroy Greene Lions Find New Ways to Reconnect

Students at Leroy Greene Academy look forward to Friday Vibes, a dedicated time each Friday during the last 90-minutes of the school day where they are able to enjoy a host of fun and enriching activities. “This is something that we came up with as a school community to support students' social and emotional development,” said David Rodriguez, Principal of Leroy Greene Academy. Students meet in class with a supervised group of similarly aged students who share a common interest where they form new friendships, hone their social skills, and treat others with kindness and respect. We had an opportunity to visit the LGA campus to check out Friday Vibes in action. Check out the video
