Two Leaves and a Bud
Happy New Year and we hope you had a wonderful holiday
season! January is Hot Tea Month, so be sure to imbibe in plenty of warming cups of comfort all month-long. We would like to congratulate our 8th Annual Holiday Raffle winners: Craig S. (shown here) and Rebecca S.!! A reminder that w e are currently on our post-holiday break and we look forward to having tea with you when we return on Wednesday, January 15th.

As many of you may (or maybe don't) know, I have been studying herbalism for about ten years. I find it fascinating to tap into the long-standing traditions and natural remedies that have been used for hundreds, if not thousands, of years  in various cultures around the world. I love to experiment on myself to see what works and what doesn't and much of my research and practice has resulted in my line of proprietary Organic Wellness Herbal Tisane Blends. It has been a few years since I released a blend in the line and I am happy to announce that I am adding a new one that I have been testing for the past nine months.

Herbs to Support the Liver

I remember learning in my Anatomy & Physiology class that the liver has over 500 functions - yes, that is correct - over 500! I remember thinking that it must have been a misprint - how is this possible? But it's true. The liver is such an important organ in our bodies and, in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the liver is usually treated no matter the condition or symptoms. This is the case even with conditions that are not "connected" with the liver in Western, allopathic medicine. While we do not have the space here to discuss all of the functions, we will highlight just a few and how herbs can help to support them.

Here are just a few of the functions that this amazing and important organ performs:
  • produces and secretes bile, which is used in digestion
  • metabolizes nutrients - carbs, lipids, protein
  • filters the blood of and metabolizes any toxins, foreign invaders, medications - basically anything that we ingest, inhale, or touch
  • stores blood and some vitamins and minerals
  • has a role in immune function
Unfortunately,  we usually do not treat this critical organ very well and it takes a lot of abuse. Our diets, lifestyles, slathering on of toxic body care products, usage of toxic household chemicals, etc. all strain the efficient functioning of the liver and can lead to sluggish performance in the areas of digestion and detoxification. This, in turn, can lead to a host of other symptoms and issues in the body. Fortunately, there are many herbs that can help to support the liver.

There are different types of liver-protecting and liver-stimulating plants that are classified by the action they perform. Listed here are four of the types of actions with some of the herbs that perform these actions. You will notice that some herbs can perform multiple actions in helping to support the liver:
  • Hepatoprotectant - protects liver cells from being overloaded with too many toxins. Such herbs include burdock root, dandelion root, licorice root, and milk thistle seed.
  • Anti-hepatotoxic - provides anti-oxidant function, increases the production of proteins in the cell, and stimulates Phase I and Phase II enzymes that are involved with the breakdown of toxins. Such herbs include licorice root and milk thistle seed.
  • Hepatic trophorestorative - increases liver cell regeneration through nutrients; provide a tonic and nourishing action. Such herbs include milk thistle seed, and oregon grape root.
  • Cholagogue - stimulates bile flow in order to aid in digestion. Such herbs include burdock root, chicory root, dandelion root, oregon grape root, and yellow dock root.
All above herbs are available for sale in our shop. Within in a week or two, we will also be launching a new blend in our line of Organic Wellness Tisanes - our Liver Support Organic Herbal Tisane. This blend that I've been formulating and testing for the past nine months consists of herbs that provide each of the above actions.
