A Message to our Community Members

We kicked off February with our first Autism Awareness workshop which provided an overview of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), early diagnosis and intervention strategies, and information on how to care for an autistic person. We also held other educational workshops at schools in South Los Angeles and connected with community members at the Friday food distributions! We also held two listening sessions in partnership with Healthnet, aimed at providing helpful programming and resources for Black women during and after pregnancy. These opportunities continue to strengthen our relationship with the community and give us a better understanding of how we can support South LA. We are committed to learning and growing with the community, and look forward to the coming months as we have lots of exciting things in the works!

Upcoming Workshops

This month we will not be having virtual workshops. We will conduct in-person workshops on mental health, reproductive health, and autism spectrum disorder for parents and guardians of students of Angeles Mesa Elementary School and 74th Street Elementary School. As always, we encourage you to reach out to us about health-related topics you are interested in learning more about!

Family Enrichment Program

The goal of the Family Enrichment Program is to advance the development and kindergarten readiness of children 0-3 years of age while developing parents’/caregivers’ education and abilities as their child’s first teacher by:

1) providing a high-quality parent/caregiver and child learning environment

2) improving the development of children

3) improving parenting skills, knowledge of child and brain development, and building social connections of parents/caregivers.

The program offers bi-weekly classes for parents and children to support and strengthen families.

The Family Enrichment Community Program (FECP) is a volunteer-led program whose purpose is to enrich parent and child interaction. Parents who have participated in the center-based family enrichment program are recruited to become Parent Facilitators. Parent Facilitators undergo a three-month core training covering: Child Development, CPR, Protective Factors, Leadership skills, and Lesson Planning. Additionally, Parent Facilitators also attend ongoing monthly workshops and support meetings. FECP Groups meet once a week for a duration of two hours. Each group is composed of children ages 0-5 years.
