September is National Suicide Prevention Month and I encourage all residents to pick up a free 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline yard sign (available in English and Spanish) at Village Hall and the Township office during regular business hours. The 988 Lifeline offers 24/7 free and confidential support for individuals in distress, along with prevention and crisis resources. Learn more here.
National Rail Safety Week runs from Sunday, September 23 - Saturday, September 29 and highlights the importance of making safe choices around trains and railroad tracks. Please remember to wait for the gates to fully rise before crossing, and pedestrians should avoid walking on the railroad tracks. For more safety tips, click here.
I encourage all residents to sign up for the 5th annual Mayors’ Tour de Proviso, hosted by the Village of Bellwood in partnership with River Forest, Oak Park, Broadview and Maywood on Saturday, October 5. This annual bicycle tour is meant to bring neighboring communities together while showcasing the rich history of our western suburbs. More information can be found in an article below.

Train Track Construction and Detours | |
Canadian National (CN) Railroad will replace the track structure on Madison Street, east of Forest Avenue, from 9 a.m. Monday, September 30, to 6 p.m. Friday, October 4. The project will include the installation of a new rubber crossing surface. Madison Street will be closed, and traffic will be detoured via Lake Street, 1st Avenue, and Harlem Avenue. Child Passenger Safety Week is September 15-21. To support this awareness campaign, the Police Department is offering free child safety seat installations and checks on Saturday, September 21 from 9 a.m. to noon in the west lot of River Forest Town Center. If you or someone you know could benefit from added protection for their little ones while on the road, stop by and speak with a technician. Household Hazardous Waste Collection | |
Residents enrolled in the Village's waste collection program can schedule free household hazardous waste (HHW) pickup from their home. Requests must be submitted by 6 p.m. on Monday, September 30. For more information or to submit a request, click here. Please note - the next HHW collection will not be held until June of 2025.

Join the Village of Bellwood, in partnership with River Forest, Oak Park, Broadview and Maywood, for the fifth annual Tour De Proviso on Saturday, October 5 starting at Bellwood Village Hall. This free event is open to residents of all ages and all riders are encouraged to wear helmets. Check-in begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by advanced riders at 8 a.m., and family-friendly riders at 8:30 a.m. The event will conclude with a Community Expo at 9 a.m. For more details or to register, click here.

Election Day Workers Needed | |
The Cook County Clerk’s office is currently looking to hire staff for Election Day, and is in need of teams of Election Judges and Polling Place Technicians to serve voters at the polls. Election Judges ensure smooth polling operations and assist voters, and earn $250 on Election Day. Polling Place Technicians assist election judges, and also ensure polling operations run smoothly, in addition to managing voting equipment setup and maintenance.
